This achievement can easily be missed as you can proceed without shooting him. To get this achievement, you have to help Van Zandt. You first want to start out by selecting the marine campaign then select the chapter 2 mission called Refinery. You will then find him in a cocoon, so release him from his pain by killing him and your achievement should unlock.
