Grand Theft Auto Online is “Not Permanent” – Take Two CEO

4.4
Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has maintained that franchises like Grand Theft Auto were a permanent deal for the publisher (though he also mentioned Red Dead Redemption in the equation and we haven’t see a sequel yet). However, that doesn’t quite extend to modes like Grand Theft Auto Online, the online component for Grand Theft Auto 5 that debuted in 2013 and has been a massive success for the publisher thus far.

During the Cowen and Company Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Zelnick revealed that, “We do expect GTA Online’s results to moderate because October will be three years since we released it. Not only was it not our intention that GTA Online was permanent, but it’s important that it not be permanent. We have to rest the franchise at some point.”

“Resting” may mean that no significant updates are released while Rockstar either works on the next iteration of the franchise or something else. At this point, the entirety of Rockstar North is focused on Grand Theft Auto Online, leaving little room for other things like the much rumoured single-player DLC. We’ll see exactly when GTA Online is rested but it doesn’t seem like it’ll be anytime soon.

Playing GTA Online was great when it was first released, but it has gotten awfully boring. They have changed so much stuff about it, that it is no longer fun, it takes an hour just to gather up enough money to make a simple upgrade to a car, because everything in the game costs way too much.

They need to start working on GTA Online 2. I love the single stories but they need to focus a lot on the online section. If GTA V online had all the content that they have now at launch, the overall game would be much much better.

GTAO is fun but repetitive. Would love to see a singleplayer DLC pop up sometime soon.

Maybe they will finally give us the DLC for Singleplayer they promised TWO YEARS AGO!!!!!!!

Really, though. Online was fun. But they ruined it, slowly but surely by slowly stripping away the PVP aspect.

this isn't suprising at all, no online game is going to last forever and I hope no-one was expecting GTAO to last forever.
