Grand Theft Auto Online is “Not Permanent” – Take Two CEO

4.4
Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has maintained that franchises like Grand Theft Auto were a permanent deal for the publisher (though he also mentioned Red Dead Redemption in the equation and we haven’t see a sequel yet). However, that doesn’t quite extend to modes like Grand Theft Auto Online, the online component for Grand Theft Auto 5 that debuted in 2013 and has been a massive success for the publisher thus far.

During the Cowen and Company Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Zelnick revealed that, “We do expect GTA Online’s results to moderate because October will be three years since we released it. Not only was it not our intention that GTA Online was permanent, but it’s important that it not be permanent. We have to rest the franchise at some point.”

“Resting” may mean that no significant updates are released while Rockstar either works on the next iteration of the franchise or something else. At this point, the entirety of Rockstar North is focused on Grand Theft Auto Online, leaving little room for other things like the much rumoured single-player DLC. We’ll see exactly when GTA Online is rested but it doesn’t seem like it’ll be anytime soon.

Come on people they wouldn't just take it down soon. And it also is not fraud if you buy the shark cards and they take it down? It's their service they can do what they want but there'll be no one on the game by the time it comes down so stop worrying. I would give an ETA of half life of GTA 7

GTA V seems to be one of those games now, like GTA IV where you'll go through stints of not playing it for months, but then come back to it and play it none stop with friends for a few weeks. Quite a few big updates are scheduled from what they've said over the next few months, I think they then need to stop with the regular updates and go full steam ahead on the next GTA installment. GTA V will give a brilliant platform for the next one, so many things have been done right, eliminate the issues they have/had and I can see the next one being unbelievable. Exiting times ahead.

Weird to think thats its been 3 years since it was released, games die out, and tbh it already seems to be on that way. I for one get no more enjoyment from that game.

if they take it down after everyone bought all the sharke cards and everything that fraud. Cod4 4 on the dam 360 is still up and running this is ridicules to even think a game would be taken down 3 years later. Moving on I get fully but turning it off?

Hoping that they make some single player DLC like TBGT for GTA4.

I haven't played GTA in moooonths. It has definitely died down since the release and I don't look forward to playing it again anytime soon. Hopefully we hear words on GTA 6 soon
