Grand Theft Auto Online is “Not Permanent” – Take Two CEO

4.4
Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has maintained that franchises like Grand Theft Auto were a permanent deal for the publisher (though he also mentioned Red Dead Redemption in the equation and we haven’t see a sequel yet). However, that doesn’t quite extend to modes like Grand Theft Auto Online, the online component for Grand Theft Auto 5 that debuted in 2013 and has been a massive success for the publisher thus far.

During the Cowen and Company Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Zelnick revealed that, “We do expect GTA Online’s results to moderate because October will be three years since we released it. Not only was it not our intention that GTA Online was permanent, but it’s important that it not be permanent. We have to rest the franchise at some point.”

“Resting” may mean that no significant updates are released while Rockstar either works on the next iteration of the franchise or something else. At this point, the entirety of Rockstar North is focused on Grand Theft Auto Online, leaving little room for other things like the much rumoured single-player DLC. We’ll see exactly when GTA Online is rested but it doesn’t seem like it’ll be anytime soon.

Taking the servers down will ruin the entire game. The only reason i still play gta v is because of the online

I dont understand what they mean by this... Like it wont be in the next GTA???

Barely played GTA V in the last 6-12 months now, but I feel like it should have been obvious that they would stop updating GTA:O eventually, it has to happen. Otherwise, how would they move on to bigger and better things?

I liked GTA:O in the early release on Xbox 360 but I feel like it got ruined by a lot of annoying updates, didn't bother getting it for the one.

Hei
gtapro151 if they take it down after everyone bought all the sharke cards and everything that fraud. Cod4 4 on the dam 360 is still up and running this is ridicules to even think a game would be taken down 3 years later. Moving on I get fully but turning it off?

I think they mean they wont keep adding frequent DLC, not shut the servers down. I can see the online still running by the time the next GTA launches.

Yeah, I doubt they'll take the servers down. They'll still make some money from the shark cards and people purchasing the game still who haven't already. (I know right, who's not bought the game yet?!) GTA IV servers are still live so I really can't see GTA V servers being taken down for a good number of years.

I like the news, with the cash it's making I can see why it's so popular and they are focusing on that right now.
