Call of Duty's three year cycle gives creative 'freedom to fail'

4.3
Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg mentioned during our recent Gamescom interview that Call of Duty's current studio cycle will keep the franchise in a lifestyle to which the audience has become accustomed. Although Call of Duty may be an annual franchise, it had been a tennis match between two studios, but earlier this year it was revealed the franchise was now on a three-studio cycle.

"That extra year of development time, particularly with the new consoles and the more powerful hardware, has really paid off thus far to iterate, innovate and try new things," said Hirshberg. "To find out which things didn't work and have the freedom to fail in the creative process, so what goes on the disc is the best ideas."

3 year cycle will be a good thing for this game, hopefully they can revive it.

Vladimer I think the whole idea of cod will be better after ghost.

Yeah, I have to admit I think all games that were being developed for the first line of current-gen consoles was set up to fail, mainly because it will take the devs a few years to fully master all the aspects of the new consoles, that's why it'll be better on a 3 year cycle, it should help each CoD differ

This is a great move made by Activision. It gives more time, to properly develop the games.

On another note, Treyarch has always made the best Call of Duty games, in my opinion. Not just because of Zombies. I like the campaign, and the multiplayer is nice too. My favorite CoD is World at War, which was made by Treyarch. And, I am excited to see a new developer working on the CoD series. So, I am gonna try Advanced Warfare out before giving out an honest opinion of the game, and what I think they have done wrong/right with the game.

Wake Hopefully Treyarch will use the extra time to make the zombies experience even better. Zombies has always been what brings me back to a CoD game after the multiplayer has become dull.

Black Ops 2 Zombies was the best, I just didn't like how the ranking system was setup, or tranzit lol.

Perhaps they will make the game less repetitive with the extra time.

I think the 3 year dev cycle should be good. I really like treyarch games, but AW looks promising. CoD 4 still holds a place in my heart.

xmioinster In my opinion, Treyarch has always made the best games, not just cause of the zombies either. Their multiplayer has been pretty balanced and the most fun to me so far.

I completely agree with you. I really loved Black Ops. My favorite cod out of them all.

So this is great news to hear.
