I would find the car you like the look of the most, a 1.6 would be quicker but its about comfort too.

A 1.4 is perfect for a first car, its what I had (Golf MK5 1.4 Petrol)

I would go onto comparethemarket/sites like this and get registration plates from cars you like on auto-trader, and see what prices you can afford ect. I was second driver on my dads insurance and it was 1400 but I am now the first driver on my Audi 2.0 diesel 170bhp with two years no claims at 860 per year

Dont get a black BOX!

Its not as easy as you think,

a bigger engine means a new gearbox/new clutch

better braking system better exhaust system, unless your a mechanic and can do all this yourself and just pay for parts only. otherwise id buy the car outright.

get something that has nice interior and good condition. I wouldn't go below a 1.4 engine

also check for full service history and a HPI check, if its around 60k mileage you will have wanted the cambelt/timing belt kit changed and preferably the clutch as they start to go at around this mileage.

Engine swaps are not a very difficult thing but neither are they easy. At a later date you decided you wanted more power the MK5 R32 is quite a beast!

Get a quote for a dirty diesel while you're looking through insure quotes. It was cheaper for me to insure a 1.7 TDI Astra as my first car than it was a 1.4 petrol

You know they're not French, right?

My first car was a 2012 Corsa Ecoflex. Couldn't have had a better first car. Cheap, reliable, great MPG, cheap to insure. Never had a problem with it. That's the reason you're seeing so many on the road. Just an all-around good car.
