After you've completed two stone tablets, you'll gain access to the mountains. After repairing the bridge located to the north of where you met Nova and then Gus's Smithy and the mines, the next day you'll meet Melanie outside the house. Then when talking to Gus back at the entrance to the mines will introduce you to him and he'll give you the hammer, asking if you'd go get him some Iron Ore.

Upon that you'll find a Magentocrystal. After obtaining the ore requested, return back to the surface and give it to Gus. After the cutscene, you'll obtain the hammer to keep and awaken the Sprite known as Flint.
