Don't Hold Your Breath for Backwards Compatibility on PS4

4.5
During E3 2015, one of Microsoft's biggest 'wow' moments came when it announced that the Xbox One would be gaining the ability to play Xbox 360 titles via a backwards compatibility service. It was a move that had the crowd clapping furiously, and as you'd expect, there's been a big call from PlayStation fans that they want something similar on the PlayStation 4.

"I was very surprised. It must have taken lots of effort for them to realise the backwards compatibility, because the Xbox 360 and Xbox One use very different kinds of architecture," Sony's Shuhei Yoshida said on the matter in an interview with EDGE. "They showed a very short list of titles that work, and doing software emulation means you have to work title by title. So I'm curious to see what kind of games will be included in those 100 games that they say will be compatible by the end of the year," he continued, sounding somewhat sceptical.

Yoshida remained sceptical when asked about the possibility of backwards compatibility on the PS4, however. "I totally understand people asking for it, and if it was easy, we'd have done that," he replied, adding: "But our focus is creating PS4 games and adding new services." Perhaps disappointing news for those of you holding out for some hope. "Remaking games on PS4 makes the games even better – with The Last Of Us, you can play at 60 frames per second, and the same goes for Dark Souls 2. Actually, I just finished Dark Souls 2 again on PS4," Yoshida concluded, belting out a quote that's bound to have people in an uproar about remasters.

Backwards compatibility seems to be a debate that never quite goes away, but where do you stand? Would you make use of your old PS3 games on your PS4, or do you prefer having older titles remastered for your new-gen hardware? Try not to be too controversial in the comments section below.

Nujabes Doesn't matter much to me. This is the "next gen". I don't care to play rehashed games again that were on the consoles before. We have playstation now either way, which is a form of backwards compatibility.

In which you have to pay for right? On the Xbox I am pretty sure you don't have to play a game you already own. The whole reason they are focusing on remastering games for the ps4 is because thats a whole nother $60 bucks per customer. Of course they don't want to miss out on that. Making people pay again for a game they own already.

Doesn't matter to me if I have to pay for it, I make money. People just have different preferences, if you want free old games. Go to the xbox one. I'm enjoying my time on the playstation. I own an xbox one, I just don't personally like it and because of that I don't play it.

(I own neither system. This is a non bias look on it)

Good for you. YOu get money. So do a large majority of the people that play video games. The issue isn't about money.
It's a lack of features.
The PS4 is the top system right now, and it is a joke.
The online service is crap. Their top features are not that marketable. Cool they have a slight graphical advantage over Xbox One.
But the Xbox One has WAY more features. Backwards compatibility is a big blow to PS4.
That feature alone will boost Xbox One. The simple fact that you can have a FULLY FLEDGED Xbox 360 and One in a single system is huge.
We don't want remasters. We shouldn't have to get the game again.
Next Gen should have backwards compatibility. Else wise you just cripple the system.
Sony can't even figure out how to do it. They can't get their shit together.

the online service isnt that bad compared to xbox one. Theyre both down the same amount of times.

That is not true. PSN goes down for scheduled maintenance all the time... Xbox has never been down for maintenance. PSN will go down just because it can't handle the stress. The only time xbox live has had issues is when they were getting DDOS'ed

Teravainen Right after Xbox did it there was a lot of articles and reports saying that Sony executives and PS4 devs said it wouldn't happen. I think it will eventually but they are waiting to see how good it does on Xbox.

The problem with the PS3 is the CPU it used is stupidly complex which would make it very difficult to emulate using the PS4's CPU and that is likely why they are not able to do it.

RepPower Would be a great feature to add but i doubt it will ever happen. Imagine if they make it backward compability all the way back to PS1 :o

Would never ever ever happen.

Unlucky to the ps4 users

I'm not trying to start anything here, but it's funny that the only thing people can say is that sony goes down a lot. Which it really doesn't, the only time it went down a good amount was when the ps4 was first coming out. After that I've been golden. I can live without backwards compatibility, I'm looking to play new games, yea the old games were fun but not gonna cry over spilled milk. Sony has their perks and so does Microsoft. It's a competition always will be.

That comment omg. I r8 8/8 nice bait.

Seriously though. Xbox Live is such a better service compared to PSN. I still remember in 2013 ( I think ) when Lulsec ( again, I think ) took down PSN for A MONTH!!! no company should deal with that. That for me made PSN look like a complete joke.

We even have the attacks earlier in the year with Lizard Squad. PSN was struggling to get back up so much more than Xbox Live was.

2013? lol no. it was like 2010 when PSN was down for a month or two. Also lately XBL HAS been down quite a bit also. (Side Note: Lizard Squad is a joke. They take credit from other people that ACTUALLY DDoSed XBL and PSN)

When all the attacks were happening and it was everywhere, Xbox was barely even going down. It was just logging in issues whereas PSN went full down for hours at a time.

Lately, I've seen nothing happen to Live and nothing has been said generally about issues so I don't think anything is going on with Live. It's probably your side.

Tik As long as they bring bo2 to new gen, im good

We are getting bo3 lol better than bo2

But BO2 was a huge success, I doubt BO3 will considering that they keep steering these CoD's into the damn future which most people are tired of. Should've left it after AW.
