Microsoft's RoomAlive makes your whole room a video game

4.6
Microsoft's IllumiRoom project has expanded beyond a single-Kinect set-up and is now called "RoomAlive." RoomAlive turns an enclosed area into an interactive gaming space, with enemies and puzzles projected on walls, floors and objects for residents to take out with their hands, feet or peripherals. The new and improved RoomAlive uses multiple projectors and depth cameras to scan a room and all of its contents, and then it superimposes interactive environments on top of everything.

"IllumiRoom was largely focused on display, extending traditional gaming experiences out of the TV," the Microsoft Research team writes. "RoomAlive instead focuses on interaction, and the new kinds of games that we can create with interactive projection mapping. RoomAlive looks farther into the future of projection mapping and asks, 'What new experiences will we have in the next few years?'"

This actually looks pretty interesting.

You would need a pretty empty room for this as I'm sure you could easily accidentally knock something over because of this.

This looked quite good when I was first linked to it last year, perhaps because it was something completely different and rather inovative. Now however, It doesn't really have much of an appeal to me, I think it would be a bit awkward and annoying to play, and not to forget, you may end up breaking a few things in the room. I think the Oculus Rift would better suffice in this case.

So, that's pretty awesome. I'm just hoping sometime in the near future we can game similar to the movie "gamer" because that'd be awesome. I mean, being able to play a game without any controller and being able to use in game voice controls would be absolutely amazing.

Lavish I'm not too much of a Kinect person myself, however I think this actually does look cool.

Same. I never did nor never will get into the Kinect but those who are very into it will very much enjoy this.

Ive been thinking about this idea since i was about 10, where you're playing video games in your whole room, the sound of it even is awesome.
