Twitch confirms sale to Amazon for $970 million

4.5
Amazon.com will purchase video game streaming service Twitch for approximately $970 million in cash. There you go, streamers. Happy? It wasn't Google!

"Like Twitch, we obsess over customers and like to think differently, and we look forward to learning from them and helping them move even faster to build new services for the gaming community," said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos as part of today's announcement.

Twitch CEO Emmett Shear added, "Being part of Amazon will let us do even more for our community. We will be able to create tools and services faster than we could have independently. This change will mean great things for our community, and will let us bring Twitch to even more people around the world."

The acquisition is expected to close in the second half of 2014.

You would have never suspected Amazon to buy Twitch but I think they will do right with it, besides most of the big companies servers are from Amazon so maybe they are cutting out the middleman. I wonder if we are going to see an amazon account integration. amazon is really branching out from just online sales, like their new Fire Phone.

Gigahertz Better than being sold to Google I guess. 970 million though.. That's crazy.

Yeah, YT is a little annoying now. I couldn't imagine the damage that would have been done to twitch

Vauxhall Crazy amount of money glad Amazon got it instead of Google

I honestly think Google could have made it better.

I personally think this as well.

I feel that Google makes things better instead of worse. Usually anyways lol

The problem was the Twitch CEO, felt it would always have the back seat to Youtube.
Amazon is new to this market and contain the infastructure, they will have a very positive impact upon Twitch.

"Im pleased to announce weve been acquired by Amazon. We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster. Were keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazons support well have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch.

I personally want to thank you, each and every member of the Twitch community, for what youve created. Thank you for putting your faith in us. Thank you for sticking with us through growing pains and stumbles. Thank you for bringing your very best to us and sharing it with the world. Thank you, from a group of gamers who never dreamed theyd get to help shape the face of the industry that we love so much.

Its dangerous to go alone. On behalf of myself and everyone else at Twitch, thank you for coming with us.

Emmett Shear, CEO"

I have a question, when it says "in cash", I guess that mean's they just wrote them a cheque for $960 million, not stock exchanges?
