Microsoft to offer five free Xbox games for June's Games with Gold

4.4
As Microsoft promised earlier in May, owners of the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One consoles will be able to download a total of five free games in June if they are paid Xbox Live Gold subscribers. June will be the first month that Xbox One users will be able to access those games.

The Xbox Wire website reports that from June 1-15, Xbox 360 owners can download Dark Souls, the acclaimed fantasy RPG from developer From Software and publisher Namco Bandai that was first released in 2011. It normally costs $19.99 to download the game from Xbox Live. From June 16-30, Xbox 360 gamers will be able to download two free titles: the side-scroller Charlie Murder, normally priced at $9.99, and Capcom's fighting game Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, which usually costs $29.99.

Xbox One owners will have to wait until later in June to get their two free games due to the need to release a system update for the console to accommodate the changes. Once that's done, these two complementary titles will be released in June: the top down shooter Halo: Spartan Assault, normally priced at $9.99, and the side-scroller Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, which usually costs $14.99. Microsoft has not yet announced exactly when the two games will be free to download.

bombshell Can I just ask why you (HYP3xPsYcHoZz) think Microsoft have change their policy on the free game with gold, I believe you still only have to have a gold sub to download the game once you have it then you can always use it, I haven't read anything from MS to say they are changing the model to match how Sony do theirs?

However I am not perfect and could have missed something !

I must have misread it but its only for the xbox one that requires the subscription :D

Thanks for that ... Looks like I will have to keep my subscription upto date as I have the Xbox 1.

" Why does the xbox one need an update to get a free game?"

Well, maybe if you were smart you would know. it's actually common sense to begin with.

I don't think these games are ones that I'm interested in apart from the Halo one. :(

Oasis Not quite sure why we'd need an update to download a free game but okay...I guess they have their reasons.

I think its because its subscription based, basically you have to have gold to get the game but if your subscription expires you cant play the game any more, which is a good thing because more game developers will be happy to give their games for free, the thing that some people don't realise as well is that microsoft and sony don't make the games, so they can't go and offer us GTA5 for free becuase it isnt their game to offer, itall up to the developer not ms or sony they can only do so much

Makes sense.

It does make me think though...if xbox is using some of the cash from xbl gold to pay the developers/publishers so we can have a free game, won't they just eventually put the price of gold up to compensate??

I doubt it, I think its just something they could say to the developers "Look they have to pay a subscription fee to be able to get the game, that subscription has to be renewed so they can play the game so its more like a loaning service than free games with gold" that would make devs think more about what games they will offer to the community for free but ive just found out its only for the xbox one the requiring subscription to play the game :)
