Xbox One disc-free console – analyst weighs in on rumor

4.8
Last night, a rumor surfaced that Microsoft was preparing to release a white 1TB Xbox One at retail, without a disc drive. Today, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has called the idea “dumb, dumb, dumb,” yet has also dismissed it as a complete rumor.

Speaking in an industry note, Pachter said if even true in the slightest, it would alienate not only retailer customers, but comsumers as well.

“If this rumor is true, it is one of the dumbest ideas of all time,” he said. “It would alienate GameStop and other retailers, and it would demonstrate that Microsoft can afford to release a 1TB Xbox One at $399 with essentially the same production cost as the $499 model with a 500GB HDD and a Blu-ray drive.

“That would likely cause gamers to believe that the model with a Blu-ray drive is overpriced, or would cause them to believe that Microsoft is greedy.

“I have three words for this idea—dumb, dumb, dumb.”

Pachter said he respects the people at Microsoft “immensely” and that they are “far from dumb.”

“I don’t actually believe the rumor,” he stated.

Rumors of the console were posted on both The Verge and NeoGAF last night, with the later’s source stating the console could launch as soon as October.

This will run game retailers out of business although I will be sticking with the original console.

loliTzzwafflez A console without a optical drive would be the dumbest idea ever "right now". Modern internet in the majority of US homes would take hours to download games if not days and lose the opportunity to try out games before buying them. Honestly, I feel this holiday season Microsoft should release a new Xbox one meant for purely gaming instead of an entertainment system. A new Xbox with a much larger hard drive without kinect and blue ray player. By doing this the price will go much lower maybe even $349.99 and improve the proccessing speed of the Xbox because it wont have to share with the kinect. Many of you would disagree with the blue ray player but think of it would you rather pay $399.99 or $349.99 for watching movies where we all know we download for free.

yea but blu ray drives can play games too so no more two disc games

Maybe when broadband gets replaced by fiber-optics (fully like available everywhere and same price) then maybe i would buy the console but with the downloads you get with broadband one would be extremely pissed at the download waiting time.

Catcher I personally think it is a dumb idea because of the amount of $500 Ones have been sold and Microsft turns around and releases a better looking xbox One for $100 cheaper.. Honestly.

They know people will want to buy it and it will save people money who haven't purchased a next gen console yet.

Modern Internet is not ready for complete digital downloads. Especially because the games are still full priced even though you only get the digital license. Seems like a limited market.
