Xbox One disc-free console – analyst weighs in on rumor

4.8
Last night, a rumor surfaced that Microsoft was preparing to release a white 1TB Xbox One at retail, without a disc drive. Today, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has called the idea “dumb, dumb, dumb,” yet has also dismissed it as a complete rumor.

Speaking in an industry note, Pachter said if even true in the slightest, it would alienate not only retailer customers, but comsumers as well.

“If this rumor is true, it is one of the dumbest ideas of all time,” he said. “It would alienate GameStop and other retailers, and it would demonstrate that Microsoft can afford to release a 1TB Xbox One at $399 with essentially the same production cost as the $499 model with a 500GB HDD and a Blu-ray drive.

“That would likely cause gamers to believe that the model with a Blu-ray drive is overpriced, or would cause them to believe that Microsoft is greedy.

“I have three words for this idea—dumb, dumb, dumb.”

Pachter said he respects the people at Microsoft “immensely” and that they are “far from dumb.”

“I don’t actually believe the rumor,” he stated.

Rumors of the console were posted on both The Verge and NeoGAF last night, with the later’s source stating the console could launch as soon as October.

YhCHKN Add the disk tray to this and it sound decent!

Why would you need 1TB for a xbox for anything if you can use discs with it. Where's your logic in that.

Lmao you obviously don't have a One. You have to download the game to the hard drive even if you have the disc and the games are huge. Ghosts is 39.5GB, BF4 is like 30 and demos are like 3. My hard drive is probably half full already

I like the look of the white Xbox One especially with 1TB but this doesnt seems pretty stupid if you ask me, but to take away discs just so they could make extra money by charging the insane prices for downloads seems like something Microsoft would do

I am not buying a second Xbox One just so I don't need to purchase discs. Also depending on your internet speeds the downloads could take ages.

Aggie I like this, cut out the middleman. Buy them straight from Microsoft.

also bad because you can get games much cheaper on disc after a while of it being out rather than a download.

Not to mention that Microsoft is a rip off with jacked prices for games that are still old. Fallout 3, Halo 3, GoW, all have insane prices compared to the disk that sells for $2-$7. I don't want to buy a classic game that I missed for a jacked price of $60 despite the age of the game.

Hopefully if they went through with making a disc-less console they would decrease the price of games based on how old they were.

your living in a fairytale land if you think that would ever be the case

ReD_Crippi from the same people that charge a banned accounts credit card I doubt they will lower the price until more games are released

I believe they said that the white xbox will be priced at 399$ if im not mistaken.
