Nintendo 'thinking about a new business structure'

But president Satoru Iwata insists "it's not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone"

Nintendo is doing plenty of soul-searching in light of its recent abject commercial performance.

On Friday, the company slashed its annual Wii U sales forecast from 9 million to 2.8 million units - a dramatic reduction that it expects will swing its full-year results from profit to loss.

"We cannot continue a business without winning," Iwata said on Friday during a press conference attended by Bloomberg. "We must take a sceptical approach whether we can still simply make game players, offer them in the same way as in the past for 20,000 yen or 30,000 yen, and sell titles for a couple of thousand yen each.

"We are thinking about a new business structure," Iwata added. "Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business. It's not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone."

Investors and analysts have urged Nintendo to broaden its horizons and boost profits by embracing smartphones on multiple occasions over the past few years, but Iwata has always insisted that his responsibility is to plan for the long term, not simply to make a quick buck.

Iwata also said today that there are no current plans to reshuffle Nintendo's management team, and that any announcement regarding potential pay cuts will be made when the company posts its third-quarter financial results in late January.

I dont think they need a new console yet, even though wii u is a flop they wil learn from it and hopefully we will see a new gamecube ore n64-n65, or whatever my point being that when the time comes nintendo will be ready but staying on this console for now is their best bet i used to like nintendo, then they made a huge flop, now all they need to do, is go back into the fame they were, hopefully.

Craigyy I would to Nintendo, the WiiU was a flop. They need a console, not a handheld thing.

yeah they need a new console i already have lots of handheld device like PSP and nintendo.

Once again, they don't need a new console to solve their BUSINESS structure issues.

pretty much this. Pushing consoles out the door that quickly would only result in more problems for Nintendo

Im_Amazing-Dude Nintendo should release new handheld consoles every 1 and a half years and a new console every 2 so they can get everything right.

A new console every two years would never work. They'd spend more money than they'd be making.

I agree... Just simply "making a new console" would absolutely ruin them financial-wise. And they'd need devs to be on board with this.

That would be an awful idea, a handheld device every 1 1/2 years and a console every 2 years isn't logical. They would not make any money at all.

Nahh They need a completely new gaming console with better graphics and such.

Graphics don't mean anything, it's all about gameplay

Well graphics play a part in any game so i believe that they do mean something. A game should not be defined by its graphical quality though, as long as it is a good game

To most people they don't. Half Life is one of my favorite games, and the graphics weren't very good, as is the same with GTA: SA

ya graphics arent a huge play. its the experience that counts. and that means both online and offline. when i had a wii, i thought they failed for online play with no voice chat system. this was a couple years ago so i dont know how it is now but none the less, that was my main point for switching to xbox. the point being it was more fun to be with friends.

Lets be honest Nintendo failed quite a long time ago, although the Nintendo DS & wii where both great hits in the market, they will never be competitors to Xbox/PS4 And gaming PC's. So no matter what 'business structure' they use, they will never reach half the amount them have earned.

I have only ever owned a nintendo wii, It is a bit boring if I am honest, it can be quite good with friends/family but on your own I could only last 15/30 minutes. @Im_Amazing-Dude Why on Earth would that help? All that means is that loads of people would get displeased with there original one, then chuck it.
