PS Now: Sony recommends 5Mbps connection

Sony promises "low latency, high-quality gaming experience" with this bandwidth

Sony has stated its recommendation of a 5Mbps internet connection for use with its newly-announced PlayStation Now cloud gaming service.

Revealed at CES on Tuesday, PlayStation Now will stream PS3 games initially (other platforms to follow) to PlayStation devices, Sony Bravia TVs and, in future, other Sony and non-Sony devices.

In response to questioning regarding bandwidth, a Sony has said it recommends users have a 5Mbps connection.

"In our internal tests, users with this bandwidth or greater have been enjoying a low latency, high-quality gaming experience," said the firm.

"PS Now tests your connection of each game and optimizes for quality if you are above the minimum requirements," it added, as we revealed in our PlayStation Now hands-on preview.

"We strive to make the gameplay experience feel as if the game is being played locally on their device - fast and responsive (including for FPS and games with twitch mechanics)," Sony went on.

"The Closed Beta will definitely provide a great opportunity to test the experience with gamers with varying connection speeds and our developers will, of course, be working diligently to optimize the service based upon the feedback we receive from the community."

The closed beta is scheduled to begin later this month. Sony has said nothing of beta applications or the scale of the test.

Scizor It's not a giant requirement. However with the PS4 selling so well in the United Kingdom, a small minority of people there will probably have issues with it.

The U.K should have really fast internet speed, my uncle has got a 50M/b per second connection speed, and he says that's not even massive compared to others lawl

Im not too sure about this but I believe that certain areas in the UK have fast speeds for cheap but then there are other areas where there is only one ISP and it has very bad connection speeds.

Good internet is really cheap where I live. =)

Lucky you, mine isn't really cheap but it's reasonable I guess.

My internet is only cheap if you bundle with tv channels also, otherwise its outrageous

It really depends on where you live. If you live out in the middle of nowhere, or in a place that doesn't have very good internet connection, then you will have problems.

Pretty much, i am personally going to have problems but i know people who only live a few suburbs away who will have absolutely no problem with it.

If it makes you feel better, I used to have Dodo. I swear when I switched to bigpond, I wanted to smash the modem, but I had to give it back D;

Yeah, in the countryside it is probably slow, but in London where most of my family live, then It's probably really fast.

DeTaiLz Thats a fast speed.
Good choice.

That's actually below average to average speed Internet connection. You should see the Google fiber Internet speeds, that is the dominant ISP in the country as of now I believe.

Yeah Google Fiber offers 1 gigabyte download and upload speeds. It should be in my area of Austin, TX soon, can't wait to upgrade.
