PS4 US shortages disappoint Jack Tretton: it breaks my heart

4.6
PlayStation 4 appears to be in short supply in North America, according to comments from PlayStation US boss Jack Tretton. The exec appeared on an official Sony podcast and stated that it breaks his heart to turn paying consumers away.

You can listen to the recording over at PS Blog US, during which Tretton said, “You have competition out there. There are lots of things that people can spend money on, especially during the holidays; and the holidays only come around once a year, so that’s really when you want to take advantage of the market opportunity…It breaks my heart if somebody’s got $400 in their hand and they want one and we can’t sell them one.”

Meanwhile in Europe, PlayStation’s Andrew House stated that PS4 will be in “good supply” over the holiday season.

It follows claims that Sony has been holding PS4 stock back, a rumour that Tretton denounced during his interview.

VPN-V2 Well Microsoft has really been on the ball with stocking the Xbox One on Amazon. PS4 I have no idea what they're doing.

I'm sure that they are trying to get units to everybody. Failing.. but trying

Yeah they will, But at the moment people on Ebay are charging 3x The store prices, Because they know how hard it is to get a PS4

WOAH, WOAH ,WOAH, there! Your facts about eBay and all are completely inaccurate. The price on eBay right now averages $50 above the normal price for a PS4 which makes almost no room for profit on the seller's account once you add tax to the original sale of the console. Just an FYI, The PS4 has had tons of shipments into stores and around online, you're just not fast enough to grab one because they are selling so fast. Keep your facts straight man because you're just putting out false rumors and that's the last thing this site needs on it.
Another note, Amazon has had at least 5 shipments of PS4s. Gamestop has had at least 3 that I'm aware of. Best Buy has had 5 shipments so far. Your facts are complete lies.

Sony shudda made more consoles, But then again what if they made too many? Then they would have the same kinda issue

YopPosted:

They should have waited a little longer until they released them, so they would have more time to produce them.

I can see how it would be hard to keep consoles in stock, with them in such high demand right now, but Sony is kind of dropping the ball.

CHP and i would assume hes more sad about not making more money than being sad about people not being able to have this console

Exactly this. All Sony has ever aimed for is doing better than Microsoft. So they're trying to break records first by selling in more places. Just, which is why they'll be reserving newly made PS4's for new releases instead of current countries that already have it. They don't care about the customers at this point. Only the money. Maybe next year it'll change.

Oh look someones talking out of their **** again.

But the sad part is it's true.
I'm not a fan of either "next-gen" console. I've done my research on both, I prefer the Xbox One exclusives by the looks of them though and how they can upgrade the hardware through cloud. But then I prefer the PS4 just because of price. 2 years time and neither would be worth it, yes I am saying that PC will out-date it. By far.

But all Sony has ever wanted was to be ahead of Microsoft, so obviously they'd do all they can, regardless of low stock in other countries.

yeah and if you remember a while back. everything that microsoft did. sony tried to beat them.

That's how competition work. There are competitors of the same niche, and one will always try to outshine the other. It's always industrial mud slinging. Same goes with other companies like AT&T vs Verizon. Dish vs DirecTv, I could go on.. Obviously Sony's tactics of beating Microsoft to the punch worked, as Microsoft sold ~900k consoles within the first month, while Sony sold ~1 Million in the first 24 hours.

Yes, but those sorts of companies are different. They don't have to produce consoles. Only routers and stable connections/server(s) and so on. Whereas Microsoft and Sony both need servers and the console. But what I'm saying is, Sony aren't doing it quite right. They should supply the majority of their customers needs in the released countries first. If it's not released elsewhere, i'm sure they can wait an extra week or two. Instead of it already being released in your country and knowing multiple friends have it, but they're out of stock for you.
Sony are also releasing consoles in more countries while there are still bugs too, not wise. Hence why Microsoft are waiting, also due to Kinect's language detection.

As for the sales, they both sold 1 million within 48 hours. Though I think it stated 24 hours for Sony. Sony then sold 2 million and then 1-2 weeks later, Microsoft also sold 2 million. PS had a one week head-start, so Microsoft are keeping up.

Anywho, they're both "Okay" consoles, I do prefer Microsoft for their Professionalism and maturity however.
