Sony thinks PS4 sales can 'significantly exceed' PS3's

The man in charge of Sony's games business believes PS4 sales can "significantly exceed" PS3's lifetime total.

Sony claimed last month that worldwide PS3 sales to retailers hit 80 million units on November 2, seven years after the system launched.

PS4 released in North America on November 15, 2013 and two weeks later in Europe and Latin America. Worldwide PS4 sales stood at 2.1 million units on Tuesday, according to Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House.

And House told MCV there are multiple reasons why he thinks PS4 is capable of selling far more units than its predecessor.

"It has an opportunity to significantly exceed what we've been able to achieve with PS3 and there's a couple of reasons for that," he said. "We start off with a price point that is much more consumer friendly than was there for the PS3.

"Also, one of the success stories for the business as a whole has been our ability to open up new geographies for video games over the last five years. You are seeing opportunities for new markets that we haven't tapped into.

"The other point is that we took several years to take PS3 from being a dual function device to a multi-functional entertainment device," House added. "PS4 arrives with a full suite of those non-game entertainment services right from day one.

"And that's important because there will be someone who wants this as a games device, but the fact it is a great place to view BBC iPlayer, for example, gives other family members reason to use it. That is crucial in broadening what the console's reach could be."

The sales so far are good they just need to maintain them

I think they can, the sales are going good so far.

it could take years for the sales to overtake PS3's

I don't doubt at all that they can exceed PS3's sales easily.

doges I think they will too, just cuz there is a larger gaming community

Well more than just because of a large gaming community, probably because of all the good attention Sony got when the console was first announced.

The sales are good, but are they going to beat out a console that has been on the market for over 7 years?

To answer that. No. Not in 1 month, not in 5 years. Honestly. It would take I think the same if not more time to outbeat it. I don't think they take into count how many people bought a New PS3 or a New Xbox 360 when the original broke. The new systems are obviously built to last a lot longer.

I don't know about more.
I think if they were going to beat the sales, it would be in about 3-4 years.

A new console will probably be released in a little less than 5 years.

It's obviously going to exceed the PS3's sales, as long as the marketing team does its job correctly.
