Sony thinks PS4 sales can 'significantly exceed' PS3's

The man in charge of Sony's games business believes PS4 sales can "significantly exceed" PS3's lifetime total.

Sony claimed last month that worldwide PS3 sales to retailers hit 80 million units on November 2, seven years after the system launched.

PS4 released in North America on November 15, 2013 and two weeks later in Europe and Latin America. Worldwide PS4 sales stood at 2.1 million units on Tuesday, according to Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House.

And House told MCV there are multiple reasons why he thinks PS4 is capable of selling far more units than its predecessor.

"It has an opportunity to significantly exceed what we've been able to achieve with PS3 and there's a couple of reasons for that," he said. "We start off with a price point that is much more consumer friendly than was there for the PS3.

"Also, one of the success stories for the business as a whole has been our ability to open up new geographies for video games over the last five years. You are seeing opportunities for new markets that we haven't tapped into.

"The other point is that we took several years to take PS3 from being a dual function device to a multi-functional entertainment device," House added. "PS4 arrives with a full suite of those non-game entertainment services right from day one.

"And that's important because there will be someone who wants this as a games device, but the fact it is a great place to view BBC iPlayer, for example, gives other family members reason to use it. That is crucial in broadening what the console's reach could be."

I hope they do, the console is great and I think Sony deserves it

Poor Sony thought they would be at 3 million consoles sold by now and they aren't even close

Hopefully they do, so the PS3 is left in the dust, great consoles but PS4 should Succeed!

Mortar I would expect nothing less considering it is the next-gen Playstation and as the years go by, more and more people get into the gaming scene and more are able to afford these consoles.

As long as third-party studios keep investing in new IPs and/or maintain a decent level of quality for their flagship franchises - so they don't end up the way of Dead Space or Megaman - and Sony delivers another The Last of Us, Ico or Tearaway, I have no doubt it's gonna do just fine. The friendlier RRP is a plus, but it wasn't the only obstacle the PS3 had to - and did - overcome.

That's crazy, lol. I never would have expected that.

I think this was expected that the next-gen console would surpass current gen.

You can already tell that it'll go past that number with the way it's going.
