Sony resets some PSN account passwords detecting “irregular activity”

4.5
Sony has reset some PlayStation Network account passwords after detecting “irregular activity” on the service. Time to reset your passwords even if you are not affected just to be on the safe side.

According to The Verge, two of its staff members in particular received the mail and readers have reported in as well. You can read the mail in full below.

Dear valued customer,

The Sony Entertainment Network team routinely monitors for any irregular activity, and if such activity is detected, we may sometimes reset passwords of affected accounts to protect consumers and their account information. Your account password was recently reset as part of this process and you will need to create a new password the next time you access your account using the “Forgot Your Password” option on the Sign in screen.

We encourage you to create a complex unique password that you have not used before or isn’t the same password as those associated with other online services. As always, we also encourage you to keep a close eye on your account for any unusual activity including emails about transactions you did not perform. Please click here if you need help in changing your password, or to contact us for additional assistance.

Also, remember that Sony will never ask you for your password or any personal or account information in an email. Please use caution if you receive any emails or phone calls from anyone asking for personal information or directing you to a website where you are asked to provide personal information.

Thank you, The Sony Entertainment Network Team

Sony has not stated where the breach stemmed from, but there have been numerous password leaks of late: Adobe and a security form found a list of passwords for Facebook, Twitter, and other services recently.

Sony also reset passwords in last month in North America and Europe.

XeXChamp This is cool for users who lost their account passwords

This doesn't mean it was getting hacked

If people are losing their accounts and then Sony has a mass password reset, it is safe to assume they are having a security breech.

Potion hopefully this will help protect against account hackers, my friend recently lost his account.

Most of the time when accounts are stolen it is from social engineers, not hackers.
The only time i can remember when actual accounts were hacked into was 2011.

"resets some" Huh. There shouldn't be a need to reset in the first place. My unlce bought a ps3 a while back like years. Always played online until this happened. Now he doesn't even connect to the internet period on it. They should Have more security and constant checks going through account to make sure the accounts do still belong the their rightful owners.

sir_greco wonder if this deals with the ps4 being hacked? pretty sad that ppl are paying their online fee and they still arent protected on PSN.

The PS4 hasn't been announced as 'Hacked' yet. Hopefully that isn't the case with this issue
People are starting to bypass the PS4's security protection/protocols...

I don't know how Sony is lacking in security.
They have all the money in the world to prevent things like this.

I know right? Xbox One FTW.

Sorry, but Microsoft clearly has more and better servers.

That is true, but there's a lot more features.
