Sony resets some PSN account passwords detecting “irregular activity”

4.5
Sony has reset some PlayStation Network account passwords after detecting “irregular activity” on the service. Time to reset your passwords even if you are not affected just to be on the safe side.

According to The Verge, two of its staff members in particular received the mail and readers have reported in as well. You can read the mail in full below.

Dear valued customer,

The Sony Entertainment Network team routinely monitors for any irregular activity, and if such activity is detected, we may sometimes reset passwords of affected accounts to protect consumers and their account information. Your account password was recently reset as part of this process and you will need to create a new password the next time you access your account using the “Forgot Your Password” option on the Sign in screen.

We encourage you to create a complex unique password that you have not used before or isn’t the same password as those associated with other online services. As always, we also encourage you to keep a close eye on your account for any unusual activity including emails about transactions you did not perform. Please click here if you need help in changing your password, or to contact us for additional assistance.

Also, remember that Sony will never ask you for your password or any personal or account information in an email. Please use caution if you receive any emails or phone calls from anyone asking for personal information or directing you to a website where you are asked to provide personal information.

Thank you, The Sony Entertainment Network Team

Sony has not stated where the breach stemmed from, but there have been numerous password leaks of late: Adobe and a security form found a list of passwords for Facebook, Twitter, and other services recently.

Sony also reset passwords in last month in North America and Europe.

Yop They need to do this with Xbox

No they don't.
MS has the proper security.

That is why MS has next to no security breaches with the Xbox.

Or maybe they do have security breeches and are just very discreet about it.

If Ms had the breeches, they would force people to change passwords like Sony is doing.

Dreams you would think after what happened with ps3 they would try to avoid this from happening again

Hopefully nothing on that scale happens again to Sony. The 2011 incident was pretty bad to say the least

You can't change the password. if you hack someones account on playstation you can't change the password only the registered console can change it .

Or Xbox has been hacked a few times, they just paid off the press to not say anything... Who knows...

If they got hacked, people's passwords would have most likely been reset. That would've been uncontrollable to keep out of public. Invalid point.

But PSN really need to crack down on their security. It's absolutely awful. That's the *second* time they've reset peoples password now because of "suspicious activity". It's appalling. One reason why I wouldn't trust it until that's fixed.
