Sony UK thinks PS4 lifecycle might be shorter than PS3

4.7
PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara has suggested that the PS4 lifecycle might be shorter than that of the PS3 in certain markets.

Sony's next-gen console launches in Europe at midnight tonight, seven years after PS3 debuted in Japan and the US and more than six and half years after it arrived on these shores.

On the eve of the launch, Sony Computer Entertainment UK boss Gara told TechRadar: "I think there's reason to believe that the next cycle might be shorter in markets such as the UK.

"It's probably a sign of the times and how much has changed in seven years, but I think the willingness and the appetite to pick up new technology fast has probably changed quite a bit.

Sony has put aside an unspecified number of PS4 consoles to purchase at its official London launch event tonight, while 300 GAME stores, 150 Tesco stores and 155 Asda stores will have stock at launch for UK consumers who haven't pre-ordered the system.

It wouldn't surprise me.
Technology will probably advance faster than people expect making this "next gen" engine, outdated.

Previous gen consoles still had a few years in them. Maybe in those few years, if development had been started then you would see a significant increase in the graphics, not like the "minimal" that everyone is complaining about. Current Gen is amazing don't get me wrong, it was just a matter of timing.

I do think that the amount of time (5 years) will be fine. I've had Xbox 360 3 years and it's almost on it's way out (ded) so 5 years will be great. Therefore next gen consoles like PS4 lasting 5 years is reasonable.

Woof
Caszech I assume this explains the price tag.

Personally I'd agree with the statement although 5 years would come round really quickly when it comes to paying for a new console again.

If they integrated backward compatibility and stopped fleecing us on new accessories so we could use the same pads etc then that would both add value whilst reducing costs by sticking with the same pads and I think more people would be happier to upgrade consoles at shorter intervals if that were the case.

Yeah, it would be great if they allowed us to use things we bought on the ps3 and to be able to use them on the ps4. I know, myself that I would be more happier with backwards compatibility.

ManlyPenguins I want them to make an entirely new console with microsofts DRM policies. That right there people, is the future of gaming.

You don't need a console for that, just an update.

Also BF4 is 25$ at gamestop
