PS4: no voice commands for third-party apps at launch

4.6
The PlayStation 4's camera will only recognise a small number of voice commands at launch, with no third-party app support for the functionality upon release.

That's according to an article on Engadget, which reports that on day one PS4 users will not be able to turn on the console, nor pause videos, using their voice, as is possible with Xbox One.

However, the PS4 console can be turned off and games can be opened using voice commands at launch. The console will also use facial recognition for logging in, similar to Xbox One.

PlayStation reps have reportedly indicated that voice and gesture functionality will be expanded over time.

Unlike Xbox One's Kinect, the PlayStation Camera is set to be sold separately from the core PS4 hardware package. It will be available with the console as part of premium hardware bundles.

Standalone the PS Camera retails for €59.99 / £54.99 / $59.99 USD. Combined with the DualShock 4's light bar, it's able to precisely track a player's position in the room.

At launch the PS Camera will be utilised by augmented reality experience The PlayRoom, which will come pre-loaded on every PS4.

Ted- Voice commands in my eyes have just been another extra they use to sell the console, pretty useless imo.

I don't find it useless at all, it's quicker to access games and media through voice rather than searching.

CHP never liked using voice commands but i was really interested for these new consoles

Kinect voice command is much more improved form what I saw at E3.

"to start including voice command support eventually."

Well they won't! That was the lesson learnt from Kinect v1!!

Developers will only develop if they are confident the whole audience can use the feature if they wish to do so.

It's a letdown, but there is so many more great features to it. I may just pick up a PS4 and a XBOX ONE.
