PS4: no voice commands for third-party apps at launch

4.6
The PlayStation 4's camera will only recognise a small number of voice commands at launch, with no third-party app support for the functionality upon release.

That's according to an article on Engadget, which reports that on day one PS4 users will not be able to turn on the console, nor pause videos, using their voice, as is possible with Xbox One.

However, the PS4 console can be turned off and games can be opened using voice commands at launch. The console will also use facial recognition for logging in, similar to Xbox One.

PlayStation reps have reportedly indicated that voice and gesture functionality will be expanded over time.

Unlike Xbox One's Kinect, the PlayStation Camera is set to be sold separately from the core PS4 hardware package. It will be available with the console as part of premium hardware bundles.

Standalone the PS Camera retails for €59.99 / £54.99 / $59.99 USD. Combined with the DualShock 4's light bar, it's able to precisely track a player's position in the room.

At launch the PS Camera will be utilised by augmented reality experience The PlayRoom, which will come pre-loaded on every PS4.

Thlack Good or bad, either way I don't care too much. One of the things I hate about the Xbox One is the forced use of the Kinnect and I hate that thing so much.

You act like you have to use the Kinect with the Xbone.
You can throw it away once you get it.

It's not forced upon you.

Backbone Sounds like something that could be fixed/improved
but i think it puts the ps4 at a slight disadvantage eoa wise

i think it puts them at a small disadvantage aswell they should definitely look into fixing it

I would think that this is one of the main features that Sony would be looking to have in time for launch.

CRM Voice commands are terrible anyway

How do you figure?
Voice commands are literally the future.

Things will not only be done manually.

KAQ Well that isn't suprising tbh :/ but it isn't that bad , because they can just add more as the time goes on :)

I wish things like Voice command were added before launch.
Something so important.

Ted- Voice commands in my eyes have just been another extra they use to sell the console, pretty useless imo.

Voice commands are honestly going to be the future.
Not everyone likes to do thing manually.

It's helpful all you have to do is talk to the console.
In my opinion they're just a cheap attempt at the Kinect...

I wasn't really expecting this to happen initially anyway. It would be nice to see them add it a little bit later on though
