Activision wants GTA 5's sales record back

4.6
Activision hopes to reclaim the record for the biggest video game launch in history before the release of Grand Theft Auto 6.

The record was held by the publisher's Call of Duty series prior to the release of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 last month.

GTA 5 generated $1 billion in global retail sales in just three days. In the UK, it has already surpassed sales of former record breaker Call of Duty Black Ops 2 and should overtake FIFA 13's lifetime sales total in a matter of days, MCV reports.

Activision UK senior brand manager Kevin Flynn told the site: "Congratulations to the team at Rockstar for their success. We look forward to getting the record back before the next GTA title."

In early September, prior to GTA 5's release, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg told CVG there's room for both Rockstar's game and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Ghosts to succeed this year.

"Obviously, [GTA] is a hugely successful franchise, and I get asked about our big competitors every year," he said. "We're always up against iconic titles, and I know people like to tell a clash-of-the-titans story, but I feel there's lots of evidence that there's room for more than one successful game, and indeed more than one successful blockbuster. And if people only have money for a few games, I like our chances that Call of Duty will be one of them."

Activision has confirmed a Call of Duty: Ghosts release date of November 5 on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC. The game will also be a launch title on Xbox One and PS4 later in the month.

Ninjosh Call of duty ghost will get some sales but not as much as gta 5.

It may just because people buy it because of the Brand Name.

Teyzah the only way they will beat it is if they ship a copy of CoD with every new console

I doubt that.
Call of Duty has a big following and they have always had a big following.
As long as this game brings something new to the table, it should do good.

yeah i dis agree even that still wont be enough to beat gta .

Personally, I think they have no chance. Plus, Grand Theft Auto V has broken five world records.

TTGNaviLlusShore oh and am i the only one who thing GTA V isnt as great as people say it is? its basically the same thing as GTA IV but with better graphics and some extra features and gamemodes in multiplayer plus a new campaign story, i personally dont think it deserved 7 records granted its fun but not that fun

Antonio_Cesaro yay another 5 crap of duty games, which i wont buy. because its the same old shiat every single time. i wont support those money biatches, but there are enough of little kids who think that they're the bosses because they get once in a lifetime a nuke. and going to buy this game year after year and they never realise that nothing changes expect crap maps and weapons.

actually ghost has quite a few changes from the previous call of duty's and they are continuing to change, they even said they were going for a more "fun" feel instead of competitive tryhard feel, not saying thats what will happen but i personally am looking forward to ghosts from what im hearing about it, don't judge a game before it releases this might be the best cod since mw2 "might" be

Call of duty has been getting worse every year so i wont be buying cod ghosts it already look **** judging by the trailers

but your judging it before release im not saying to buy it but atleast wait til it comes out and see it on youtube or something before making assumptions like that

No just no. I am sorry but GTA 5 quadruples the features it had in GTA IV vs most call of duty only adding about 20% new stuff 10% of which is the UI.

I don't think many people understand how call of duty is the joke of the hardcore gaming community. You can deny it all you want but it is true. When I am talking about hardcore gamers I am referring to people that play multiple genres and games and have played many games on the Xbox, PS, whatever Nintendo has, and PC. Most of these gamers are older and see Call of Duty as what little kids play and the casual gamers and the casuals that think they are hardcore.

Since when did more features = better game? Seriously?

I beat GTA 5 in like 20 hours, waited for GTA Online, got bored with it, and returned the game. But in every Call of Duty game I have atleast 5 days play time, hell, I even enjoyed the BF4 Beta on my PC more.

Features =/= better game.

No one cares about you hardcore gamers, playing games other than call of duty doesn't make you a hardcore gamer. Spending $1,000s on a gaming PC doesn't make you a hardcore gamer either.

Aren't hardcore gamers the ones that play games 24/7? IF it is then every game has there own hardcore gamers.

I went to the GTA 5 midnight release, there were a ton of kids with their parents there. Don't give me any BS about how there aren't any kids that play GTA 5. And no one besides teenagers that think they're mature see CoD as a game kids play. I'm in the Air Force and I have a ton of buddies that play.

Many hardcore gamers don't only play games other than call of duty but they play a wide variety of genres. I play games whenever I can because it is a huge hobby of mine. I have written a huge variety of game reviews. When I play some games like ARMA I am normally acting like a military squad and we try to approach situations realistically. Of course we cannot play video games all of the time because we have other things to do (work, school, extra activities, etc ). We are the ones that you might see at events like pax. But here is the point that I'm trying to make, we know a good and bad game when we see it. Call of duty is a milked out cash in to a large corporation that appeals to the casual gamers. GTA 5 appeals to the casual and hardcore gamers because it is just a good game.

Btw gta 5 in 20 hours? Did you do any side missions or exploring or looking for easter eggs?

I'm in the Army(I know I said AF earlier, I was tired) and seeing kids play ARMA just makes me upset. None of you know how the real military does it.

That's me and my real squad, not a PC game.

This is the best definition of hardcore gamer I could find; "Someone who plays video games as a primary hobby. They tend to spend large amounts of time playing games, often in excess of two or three hours a day.

Hardcore gamers tend to care less about graphics then casual gamers. While some specialize in a single genre, they typically have fairly diverse taste in games, frequently playing a wide variety of games from different genres. They'll often seek out obscure and older games, based on word of mouth or positive critical reception. Hardcore gamers put good gameplay above all else, and don't mind if a good game has poor (or even nonexistent) graphics, sound, characters and plot. "

So if you're complaining about CoD graphics, you aren't a hardcore gamer. Writing reviews also doesn't make you a hardcore gamer. The ones I see at pax are just people who have made a career out gaming, not hardcore gamers.

You don't know a good and bad game when you see it. You just know how to jump on the "omg same game every year, it's sooo bad" train. A bad game wouldn't sale 500 million in 24 hours. Sniper Ghost Warrior 2, now that's a bad game.

You better put effort into hating FIFA, Madden, NBA 2k, etc, because they release a game every where also.

And no, I didn't do the side missions. I bought the game for the main story and GTA Online.

I'm loving the fact that you guys call activision money hungry but not Rockstar
rockstar already made over a billion dollars and now they are getting rid of every glitch so people are forced to buy there shite money packs
20$ for 1 mill f*ck that

Rockstar sheeps are as bad as any other sheeps. People complained when CoD gave you the options to buy camos and called them money hungry. But when rockstar gives you the option to buy money, they're doing a favor to the world.

Meet They won't beat it. People are starting to hate cod.

Same excuse that's been said since every game after MW2.

Try again.

It has been used since MW2 but I have only heard one person in real life say they can't wait for Ghost's. This COD is going to have record low sales.

If it does have record low sales are going to be higher then most games will ever achieve.

Word of mouth means nothing. I can easily go around saying "I think the Xbox One will outsell the PS4 because I only know one person who is getting the PS4."

How true would that be?
