Activision wants GTA 5's sales record back

4.6
Activision hopes to reclaim the record for the biggest video game launch in history before the release of Grand Theft Auto 6.

The record was held by the publisher's Call of Duty series prior to the release of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 last month.

GTA 5 generated $1 billion in global retail sales in just three days. In the UK, it has already surpassed sales of former record breaker Call of Duty Black Ops 2 and should overtake FIFA 13's lifetime sales total in a matter of days, MCV reports.

Activision UK senior brand manager Kevin Flynn told the site: "Congratulations to the team at Rockstar for their success. We look forward to getting the record back before the next GTA title."

In early September, prior to GTA 5's release, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg told CVG there's room for both Rockstar's game and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Ghosts to succeed this year.

"Obviously, [GTA] is a hugely successful franchise, and I get asked about our big competitors every year," he said. "We're always up against iconic titles, and I know people like to tell a clash-of-the-titans story, but I feel there's lots of evidence that there's room for more than one successful game, and indeed more than one successful blockbuster. And if people only have money for a few games, I like our chances that Call of Duty will be one of them."

Activision has confirmed a Call of Duty: Ghosts release date of November 5 on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC. The game will also be a launch title on Xbox One and PS4 later in the month.

Mortar Activision will have their work cut out for them, I doubt that they will be able to take the sales record back. Maybe if they bundled Modern Warfare/Modern Warfare 2 with pre-orders of Call of Duty: Ghosts could they beat GTA V.

I don't even think then they will beat GTA V; the game has set world records lol

Ortho This is going to be extremely hard unless cod becomes ground breaking.

Yeah, which it probably won't.

It might......after 5 cod releases lol.

The younger audience will still always get it, no matter how bad it is.

Falsified
Treyarched Hopefully they don't come close. Call of duty doesn't deserve any record except most resold piece of crap in history.

I think you're wrong. I wouldn't say that they have had "a crappy history"

If anything, they have had a brilliant experience.

It doesn't matter what reward you think they are eligible for. The fact is that the call of duty franchise has pulled in billions of dollars over the years. To achieve that many sales they must be doing something right

-Hardwell Nope call of duty is dying so no this won't happen :/

So true, but who know mabey they might make a cod better than GTA or any rockstar game, metaphorically speaking.
