Activision wants GTA 5's sales record back

4.6
Activision hopes to reclaim the record for the biggest video game launch in history before the release of Grand Theft Auto 6.

The record was held by the publisher's Call of Duty series prior to the release of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 last month.

GTA 5 generated $1 billion in global retail sales in just three days. In the UK, it has already surpassed sales of former record breaker Call of Duty Black Ops 2 and should overtake FIFA 13's lifetime sales total in a matter of days, MCV reports.

Activision UK senior brand manager Kevin Flynn told the site: "Congratulations to the team at Rockstar for their success. We look forward to getting the record back before the next GTA title."

In early September, prior to GTA 5's release, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg told CVG there's room for both Rockstar's game and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Ghosts to succeed this year.

"Obviously, [GTA] is a hugely successful franchise, and I get asked about our big competitors every year," he said. "We're always up against iconic titles, and I know people like to tell a clash-of-the-titans story, but I feel there's lots of evidence that there's room for more than one successful game, and indeed more than one successful blockbuster. And if people only have money for a few games, I like our chances that Call of Duty will be one of them."

Activision has confirmed a Call of Duty: Ghosts release date of November 5 on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC. The game will also be a launch title on Xbox One and PS4 later in the month.

What they need to do is get their heads down, stop releasing the game every year and take 2-3 years, or however long it would take, and actually work on making the best CoD there has ever been, don't just say it's the best Call of Duty to date for the sake of it being CoD like they do every year. If a bunch of little kids go rage mode because they're not getting their precious re-skinned CoD next year or the year after, they'll need to deal with it and hopefully by the time the new game comes out, they'll all be a bit more mature and realise it was for the benefit of the once great company, and us as players.
If they do that, then they might just have a chance to come back as the Activision we knew at CoD 4.

I think the sales will hurt because some people might wait till the Xbox One is released to get it.

If they put more time into the game like 3 years then yeah maybe.

Yeah Activision... with a game that has been the same but a new name for a while every year good luck...

So they think because they have a bunch of little kids "mlg pr0" it'll surpass GTA? Please. Get your head out of your ass.

How about if they stop releasing CoD a game every year they might have a shot. Maybe they can start taking some pride in the games they produce

How about actually making a good game.
Then you might be within a chance.
Instead of churning out a Call of Duty every year that's just the same as the one before with a different skin on it and some extra features that no-one uses.

GTA's record won't be broken until something amazing is released, and call of duty definitely won't break it, chances are BF4 will outsell ghosts..

If they think this will happen they're crazy

Really Activision? Do you really have to be #1 in everything? CoD will never surpass their record unless they make a new franchise that looks absolutely amazing. Money isn't everything, but I guess it is for Activision.
