PS4 sets out to 'change PlayStation brand image', says designer

4.4
Sony's new console will usher in not just a new generation but a change of brand image for PlayStation, says PS4's head designer Tetsu Sumii.

PS4 ditches the curvaceous lines of the PS3 for a more straight-edge look with sharp edges - somewhat like the PS2.

Nintendo, with its latest console Wii U, chose to stick closely to the design and branding style of its previous machine, in an effort to maximise the Wii U's appeal to the enormous Wii user base. But Sony aims to take the opposite approach.

Sumii, who serves as the chief designer of Sony's UX Platform Design Group and lead the design of PS4, thinks the "PlayStation brand image needs to be changed" to mark the start of the next gen.

"When we started the product design for PS4, we didn't start by thinking about what the shape would be. It was more about how we were going to create a new brand identity through the product," he told the PS Blog.

"I just wanted to make a simple object for the living room. Sometimes products are a little too exaggerated. It should be simple. That's my thinking.

"I think the PlayStation brand image needs to be changed a little bit, as it's a new console, and we have to show what we're pointing towards for the future. So I thought it should be one of the most smart, cool, and intelligent products from Sony. Not just from Sony Computer Entertainment, but the company as a whole.

Sony has confirmed a PS4 launch date of November 15 in US and November 29 in Europe and Latin America.

SliceFX I don't see no appealing change...

I don't think anyone expected you to...

I agree. I think it will change the image of Playstation.

I mean it's been changed soooo drastically to see all the people saying "looks the same to me" or "uhhh, I uuuuhh don't see no uuuhhh appealing change" is just ridiculous, it doesn't even matter what console you plan on getting if you don't see the complete makeover Sony has done you are simply blind

That's the problem though the die hard Microsoft fans don't see this I am not a die hard Sony fan I like both Sony and Microsoft and I can see Microsoft has made drastic changes too not just Sony you just get a lot of fan boys on here spouting their mouths and it makes me laugh really how sad they really can become but I just move onto another topic and let them get on with it it has nothing to do with me.

I mean I prefer the ps4 but that doesn't stop me from admitting that the Xbone is a good console

Third_Eye I hope they do this more than just visually. I remember when PS2 was everything and Sony was huge. With this current (and soon to be last) generation stuff, 360's above the PS3. Would be cool to see Sony dominating again, maybe reminisce a little on the PS2 days!

Not gonna lie, I totally agree with you!

with the way things are looking it's not a stretch to say they will return to their glory days

That's looking to be true. I remember my old PS2 days.
I remember when I could take $60 and get about 3-4 good games. Now I can get 1 game that last a whole month. I'd love to see Sony on top again.

Unfortunately I don't see getting the 3-4 good games for $60 anytime soon but I'll take all the free games that ps+ will be giving out every month including the 9 at launch
