Microsoft: Xbox One sell-outs at launch are "inevitable"

4.6
Xbox One's launch on 22nd November will be Microsoft's greatest ever product launch, with over 10 "billion dollar IPs" in the field, corporate vice president Phil Harrison has told Eurogamer. The manufacturer is "working hard" to ensure that there are no shortages, but Harrison feels that the console is bound to sell out at some retailers.

"We hope so," he said, when asked whether those who hadn't preordered would be able to find a console. "There are a few weeks to go between now and launch. Pre-orders have been unprecedented. It will mean Xbox One by far and away the largest launch we've ever done on a global basis and on a UK basis. And we work carefully with our retail partners to make sure we have as much capacity and inventory as possible.

"Inevitably, there will be situations where demand outstrips supply. But we work hard to minimise the impact of that," he continued.

Asked whether the console might sell out during the Christmas period, Harrison kept his cards close to his chest. "It's hard to predict, but the demand is very high. We will do everything we can to get as much inventory into our retail partners, because we want to sell them. There's no desire on our part to lose a sale or hold back inventory."

Big Phil's American counterpart Phil Spencer (boss of Microsoft Studios) has already promised that there won't be store shortages in the US. "There might be a line," he said, "but I don't want it to be that if you didn't pre-order in September, you can't get one."

It's been suggested that the next generation of console hardware will be the last, as the idea of a fixed-spec box beneath your TV goes out of fashion. Harrison doesn't see it that way - he feels that consoles can co-exist with disruptive emerging platforms like mobile and tablet.

"You're seeing a lot of growth in console but you're also seeing a lot of growth in gaming fullstop, whether it's on mobile phones, tablets or consoles and a number of new entrants. So the games market overall is in an incredibly strong position.

Dr-J Well a couple of months ago they said they are making 25x more consoles than Sony for launch

I thought the preorder number was much greater for ps4 though
No, Microsoft have much greater manufacturing capabilities than Sony.

Well I did some research, and the total game preorders went as follows: http://icap.me/i/UXMBynp4lM.png Although that is for games and only the top ten, I would say PS4 is much more popular (400k game preorders more popular)

Pearity Both consoles will be on shortage when they release I am sure of it I just hope my friend gets his on day one as he pre ordered before august 6th and will be annoyed if he doesen't get it.

I don't think Xbox one will go out of stock MS said they're are making a lot more consoles to be safe
Yea its not going out of stock. This is because nobody wants it. People want the PS4 more.
I cant even stand how fanboyish that comment is. Both consoles are in high demand. ps4 appears more popular, but in reality it a 2:1 or even technically a 1:1 ratio. Both are in high demand. Oh, and btw saying people want the ps4 more is basically saying, That people including myself want it more than the xbox one. You should of stated it like this "More People want the ps4" just trying to help.

Really? That's cool to bad that's their opinion. Ps4 will have many downsides like the ps3. But like I said I don't really care for your opinion.

Cost launch day for both xbox one and ps4 is going to be nuts!

Agreed, I'm getting the PS4 around December since I pre-ordered it to late so I'll have to wait for the newer consoles.

They could just make more consoles so it wouldn't sell out?

I always wonder why they don't continue to make more.
