Grand Theft Auto 5 “feels next-gen” to Rockstar, says firm

Grand Theft Auto 5 may not be releasing on next-gen consoles but the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions feel next-gen to Rockstar.

Speaking with IGN, Rockstar North associate technical director and combat designer Phil Hooker said part of the reason it feels next-gen to the developers is the team was familair with the hardware after developing GTA 4.

“Every aspect of the game had to be better, richer in gameplay and more fluid and knowing we were launching on the same platforms meant we could focus on extracting the most out of those consoles and making the game as fantastic as possible,” said Hooker.

“In the end we surpassed our own expectations and during development I think everyone working on the game has been astounded by improvements to the graphics, or new mechanics, or AI, or mission scope along the way.

“Hopefully the gamers will see all of these improvements at once in one go, compared to GTA 4 this definitely feels ‘next generation’ to us.”

Grand Theft Auto 5 will be released on September 17.

I thought gta v was going to be on next-gen that's why I wasn't going to get the 360 version. But I guess I'll have to wait and see if they change there minds :/

thats great that it feels next gen and all, but this game basically has a life span of about 2 months because its unplayable on ps4 and xbox one which is complete BS. really never occured to me why such an advanced system cant play an older game from a previous gen, so dumb

I don't know? But i think they should make GTA v for next gen increasing players online and make graphicks even better if they can. GTA V for current gen only has 16 players online and the world is so big they could put 3 times more players in one server.

There's a difference between feeling next-gen and being next-gen. I hope they come out with a new gta for the next-gen or at least update it so that we can play it on the next-gen.

I have the game and I've been playing since last night and I totally agree with Rockstar on this. Compared to GTA 4, this game is outstanding. The missions, free roam, cars, everything is so much better. It makes me excited to see what's to come with the next-gen consoles!
