There's room for Call of Duty and GTA, says Activision Publishing CEO

4.5
Call of Duty goes up against other potential blockbusters on an annual basis, but once or twice in a console generation, during a Grand Theft Auto release year, the stakes are raised a little higher.

Grand Theft Auto 5 has a fair chance of knocking the FPS series off the top of the annual best-seller lists it so regularly dominates, but Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg has told CVG there's room for both Rockstar's game and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Ghosts to succeed this year.

"Obviously, [GTA] is a hugely successful franchise, and I get asked about our big competitors every year," he said in a newly published interview.

"We're always up against iconic titles, and I know people like to tell a clash-of-the-titans story, but I feel there's lots of evidence that there's room for more than one successful game, and indeed more than one successful blockbuster. And if people only have money for a few games, I like our chances that Call of Duty will be one of them."

Asked if he believes Call of Duty can continue to grow as a franchise, Hirshberg said: "I certainly hope so. The fact that it's a console transition year adds complexity, and if you look historically at what happens during console transitions is there are short-term challenges followed by long-term opportunities.

"We've discussed that pretty openly, but that said I think the franchise has never been stronger. More people are playing Call of Duty now than ever before, and in terms of performance we're producing the best season of digital content we've ever had.

"These things point to key interest and momentum, but there are challenges and confusion in the marketplace with regards to whether people are going for current gen or next gen. I think the creative challenge we have with Call of Duty is to make a game the fans love and at the same time build a new game that's innovative."

-InsanelyAwesome- GTA V will out sell CoD Ghosts I am confident of that. But CoD should not be concentrating on GTA V its a completely different style of game, they need to concentrate on staying top of the FPS section and fend off the attack of Battlefield 4.

This is true but in all honesty GTAV will sell the most in my opinion, its most likely the most anticipated game of 2013 and will stay top for a while yet. No doubght in my mind that they will stay top for a long time.

Relentless757 Why choose CoD over GTA? GTA has MULTIPLAYER that offers more than CoD Multiplayer. Plus people get CoD for multiplayer. Play the same maps over and over again. GTA Online will let you create missions, maps, and races. You can rob stores with your friends and then kill them and take all the money! Plus it is open world.

Preferences. Not everyone goes for open-world games. I didn't care for GTA 4's multiplayer. Some friends and I just drove around and raced each other, which got stale pretty quickly. Call of Duty is also first-person, which some people prefer. GTA can only offer more if the person playing it prefers the features and mechanics. It's not like GTA is Call of Duty with added features. It's something that isn't even comparable, so preferences will play a big role in what people choose. I'm getting both, but GTA will not be my multiplayer game for sure. I may play it here and there with friends, but Ghosts will have my attention for a while with multiplayer.

pooky177 Not gonna lie, If I had to choose ONLY one game to play for the next year it would be COD rather than GTA, although I love GTA.

I find that ironic because cod gets boring by January. That's why they release dlc generally around the same time. Gta will NEVER get old or stale. Only a fool would choose cod over gta.

Well call me a fool, but I too agree with pooky177 and just because it becomes boring to you doesn't mean it does to everyone else. Besides dlc does nothing to keep anyone I know to keep playing any game, they play the game because they want to. Also I know at the end of the day I'll be putting more time onto cod than gta, thus gta will get my money at some later time while cod will be getting it on release. Ps I've been more bored of gta than cod.
