There's room for Call of Duty and GTA, says Activision Publishing CEO

4.5
Call of Duty goes up against other potential blockbusters on an annual basis, but once or twice in a console generation, during a Grand Theft Auto release year, the stakes are raised a little higher.

Grand Theft Auto 5 has a fair chance of knocking the FPS series off the top of the annual best-seller lists it so regularly dominates, but Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg has told CVG there's room for both Rockstar's game and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Ghosts to succeed this year.

"Obviously, [GTA] is a hugely successful franchise, and I get asked about our big competitors every year," he said in a newly published interview.

"We're always up against iconic titles, and I know people like to tell a clash-of-the-titans story, but I feel there's lots of evidence that there's room for more than one successful game, and indeed more than one successful blockbuster. And if people only have money for a few games, I like our chances that Call of Duty will be one of them."

Asked if he believes Call of Duty can continue to grow as a franchise, Hirshberg said: "I certainly hope so. The fact that it's a console transition year adds complexity, and if you look historically at what happens during console transitions is there are short-term challenges followed by long-term opportunities.

"We've discussed that pretty openly, but that said I think the franchise has never been stronger. More people are playing Call of Duty now than ever before, and in terms of performance we're producing the best season of digital content we've ever had.

"These things point to key interest and momentum, but there are challenges and confusion in the marketplace with regards to whether people are going for current gen or next gen. I think the creative challenge we have with Call of Duty is to make a game the fans love and at the same time build a new game that's innovative."

It will be interesting to see how Call of Duty, and Battlefield for that matter do against the incredible sales figures generated from GTA V. It will be tough to beat.

-Ghosty 2 years of development (ghosts) compared with 5 years of development (GTA V) I think I know which is going to be the better game.

Obviously. CoD is always the same.

Development doesn't always result in a better game, it does most of the time though. From the looks of it Grand theft auto V is going to top ghosts by far

I agree, GTA V looks amazing, it looks like a completely new experience unlike Ghost, being just another CoD.

Well I can at least say that Rockstar makes good games instead of a new game every single year, that is the same with just like 5 new things added.

I think the fact that GTA does not come out with a new one each year. makes the fans come out and buy one when it does come out and with the delays it had more and more people are getting interested and excited for it. It should make it for a good competition between the two games.

I see people going on about the "name" being the reason CoD will still outsell GTA. GTA is one of the biggest franchises in history, has been going a lot longer than CoD and has a bigger fan base. So if any game will sell more because of the "name" its GTA.

Wokze Cod will always be a top seller, just because of the name it has.

Agreed, I bought every single cod ever published, I love it.

Not really. GTA V is definitely going to oversell CoD. GOTY in my opinion.

Well Lets look at the stats...

Grand Theft Auto III
As of March 26, 2008 14.5 million units,

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
As of March 26, 2008, 17.5 million units.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
21.5 million units (March 2008)

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
8 million units (March 2008)

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
4.5 million units (March 2008)

Grand Theft Auto IV
25 million units (November 2012)

This is not including the PS3 Digital copies and as you can see these stats are a lot out dated so even more copies would of been sold and from looking at Call of Duty stats they look like its going to be close but in honest opinion I think this game will win GOTY award and most copies sold.
