Xbox One: external storage won’t be supported at launch

4.6
Xbox One will not allow you to add external storage for games or media installs at launch, Microsoft has confirmed.

The news comes from the latest Major Nelson podcast. Answering a fan question at PAX about the feature, he said: “The future plan is for definitely to support external storage much like we do on the Xbox 360.

“My understanding is that feature will not be there at launch because the team is working on some other things, but it definitely is on the list. I don’t know when it will come in though.”

Xbox One will ship with a 500Gb internal hard drive, and it was confirmed back in May that users can’t replace the internal drive.

Sony has said it will allow users to change their internal PS4 hard drives come launch.

You can't take out the hard drive and you cant put in an external hard drive. You are screwed. The only thing you have is the cloud. But you have to have really good upload speeds or it will take forever.

Companies always do this sell your half the console and sell the rest later!

Smeargle I haven't even filled my 360's 250gb hard drive, 500gb is more than enough.

I know right, my 250gb has kept me going for 3 years and it's not even half way full yet.

I have a 120GB and I haven't filled that up.

KarmaRambo Huge mistake by Microsoft, many people will run through the 500GB hard drive extremely quickly, I was planning on buying an external hard drive.

You do realise you get a hefty chunk of cloud storage, so the HDD will almost be soley used by game installs, and 500GB is probably around 40 games - there's not even going to be that many at launch

You must realize that you can't access the cloud without internet. Thus, you won't be able to access all your purchased content without internet.

If you don't have internet but you buy an Xbox One and roughly 40 games to fill up the HDD, you need to sort your priorities out... ****
