Xbox One: external storage won’t be supported at launch

4.6
Xbox One will not allow you to add external storage for games or media installs at launch, Microsoft has confirmed.

The news comes from the latest Major Nelson podcast. Answering a fan question at PAX about the feature, he said: “The future plan is for definitely to support external storage much like we do on the Xbox 360.

“My understanding is that feature will not be there at launch because the team is working on some other things, but it definitely is on the list. I don’t know when it will come in though.”

Xbox One will ship with a 500Gb internal hard drive, and it was confirmed back in May that users can’t replace the internal drive.

Sony has said it will allow users to change their internal PS4 hard drives come launch.

500GB is more than enough at launch, I doubght everyone will buy every game straight off also the cloud storage system may offer a lot more so everybody will have to wait and see.

It isn't that big of a deal for me, as I have a 250GB hard drive right now, and haven't even used a quarter of it.

well hopefully soon enough it's supported. would suck to run out of room on a non removable hdd

Urth You will not need the extra storage in the first place. So

Well with a lot of game installs you might eventually need it, although not for a long time.

And if your HDD inside fails I am sure its not a hard repair either.

Pashtun You can't take out the hard drive and you cant put in an external hard drive. You are screwed. The only thing you have is the cloud. But you have to have really good upload speeds or it will take forever.

I don't think you know how the cloud works. If you can acess the internet at all your fine. If you download something and put it on the cloud it will take exactly the same time as would by putting it on your hardrive. Also if your trying to access something off the cloud it will be instaneous as long as you have internet connection.

Exactly, not to mention chances of running out of 500GB of space is extremely unlikely.

To be honest you won't need more than 500GB for AGES.
My 60GB is still 10GB off full after years.

500Gb is more than enough space.
