Xbox One to restrict Skype, OneGuide and Game DVR to Xbox Live Gold

4.7
If you want to experience many of the features that Microsoft has in store for the Xbox One console, you had better have a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription ready to go. Microsoft has confirmed several of the console's major features will require Xbox Live Gold access.

In a page on the Xbox.com site, Microsoft has a list of all the Xbox One features that will need an Xbox Live Gold subscription. Besides features like playing multiplayer games and accessing streaming videos apps that are already required for the Xbox 360, Xbox Live Gold members who own the Xbox One will be the only ones to use its Skype chat program, the OneGuide television guide menu, the SmartMatch multiplayer matching service and the Game DVR options that let gamers record, save and upload game footage.

We have been critical of Microsoft in the past for insisting that Xbox 360 owners pay extra, via Xbox Live Gold, to access its many streaming video apps like Netflix and Hulu, when those same apps are available on other game consoles, set top boxes and smart TVs without an extra fee. However, this summer Microsoft started offering some extra value to Xbox Live Gold users by letting them download at least two free pre-selected Xbox 360 downloadable games per month; it's unknown if that same program will be extended to the Xbox One.

pig Pay 4 Skype? HAHAHA

Well you're not really paying for skype, its just an addition to Xbox Live.

Who ever has silver just has to use the Skype on the computer like normal, simple as that.

Who has an Xbox without Xbox Live Gold?

Sanchezio Ummm, Microsoft. Skype is free o.0, why would that be added to the gold only list, some things I just don't understand.

Money grabbing bastar*s.

How is that? They're giving you features as an incentive to pay for their service. This is also going to be superior to the other versions due to the fact that it'll be on your TV bud. :)

So just because it's on your TV makes it superior? Good lord

Hey, It's Skype Premium essentially...

This isn't really a surprise. I was expecting it.

Xbox Live isn't really overpriced. You get a lot for just $60 a year. And now you are getting even more.

Why would you have an xbox without gold?

People who say Skype is free probably don't realize if we are able to do Vid Calling using the Kinect that more than one person is considered "Premium Skype" I have a feeling doing this kind of stuff will be free on Xbox and we will be able to do group skype calls. Microsoft using that money from XBL Gold to pay skype for premium features that will only work on Xbox? Just a thought
