Microsoft needs to “win the value argument,” over $499 Xbox One

4.6
Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg isn’t too worried over Xbox One’s $499 price point, but he does feel that the firm needs to prove why it’s worth the price.

Speaking with GI International, Hirshberg said it’s up to Microsoft to “win the value argument,” but for now, the “win goes” to Sony for it’s lower price.

“If you do a focus group of a gazillion people and you show them two prices for two competitive products, 100% always prefer the lower price,” he said. “I think from a first impression standpoint the win goes to Sony, at least as it relates to pricing. Microsoft is going to have to win the hearts and minds and convince people that the higher price point is worth it, and that it provides really meaningful capabilities that will be meaningful to consumers. And it’s a long game, so I am sure that’s what they intend on trying to do.

“I feel they have to show why that’s a good thing and why it’s worth the premium and deserves inclusion and why it’s something that gamers are going to come to really value and appreciate.

“It’s going to be a fun battle to watch, but I think they definitely have to win hearts and minds in terms of the value of it.”

Xbox One and PS4 are both due sometime in November.

This isn't going to happen... this might happen sometime in 2014, but not this year, the year it comes out.

Sorcery So many people just keep missing the point, yes we all know where the extra $100 comes from, the Kinect. But the issue is that nobody wants or needs Kinect, it's just an extremely expensive gimmick that we're being forced to purchase.

This sums everything up.

Not really a gimmick, the Kinect v1 had many games that needed improvements but it was a learning curve, it was and still is a very popular tool for modding with either PC's or paired with other things like robots. Microsoft launched it as a form of consumer research (how people use it,when, how long, what games) and also as a development tool for anyone that wanted to be creative.

The new one is a mutation of the first, a refined, upgraded version. People will tale it apart the same as the v1, they'll do amazing things with it and hopefully devs will too. Making it mandatory is a sure way to keep it interesting as new ideas are formed and new uses are found.

It might cost more, but at least anyone that has it will have access to it's evolution, either on Xbox (like Kinect labs but better) or the more advanced modification scene.

IncrediBowl I don't think people understand that the only reason Kinect had **** games was because of the amount of people that bought it. The majority of people that bought it were families, resulting in a bunch of games fit for families. If every person has a Kinect, it makes it worth it for developers to actually make a game that uses Kinect, especially with the improvements in it.
The public also doesn't understand that Microsoft and Sony are most likely already losing money on the consoles. There were people parting out 360s when they came out..

Neither Microsoft or Sony are losing money on the consoles in any way whatsoever. I would love to see some statistics showing that they are losing money, oh wait there aren't any.

Neither of you have proof so it automatically voids your argument. You can't say they are not when you also are guessing.

At least try and use facts when posting these sort of things. That goes for everyone.
