Xbox 180: Microsoft to 'completely reverse' its DRM control on Xbox One

Update: Microsoft has released an official statement, it can be located here - http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/update

A new report from Giant Bomb states that Microsoft will drop its DRM control with Xbox One and the need for the console to log in online every 24 hours.

According to the GB report, the following will occur:

• No more always online requirement
• The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
• All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
• An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
• All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
• No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
• Region locks have been dropped

Discussion of the recent changes can be found within this thread - http://www.thetechgame.com/Forums/t=5363350/microsofts-announcement-about-xbox-one-19th-june-2013.html

"An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games - After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

"Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today - There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

"In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

"These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray."

The benefits are obvious - Xbox One will be usable with or without an internet connection, dispersing the fears of a vocal and outraged crowd who staged a backlash against the original online-reliant policy.

The changes also re-open the door to game rental services, the lending of games between friends and the purchase and sale of used games to anyone, anywhere without fear of DRM control.

And a region-free console will mean gamers will be able to import titles from other regions without restriction.

On paper I still think the PS4 is more impressive, but I think this is a step in the right direction by MS. Personally I think that the difference in specifications is irrelevant seeing as there's not a huge difference. People should be buying whatever corresponding system based on personal preference and whatever appeals to them the most. I grew up on the Playstation franchise until I purchased an Xbox 360, I own both an Xbox and PS3 and prefer the Xbox much more. Both systems will have their pros and cons, much like the current generation but based on this turnaround by Microsoft, I think I'll be sticking with the Xbox. Hopefully now though they make this Kinect always on malarkey redundant, then I'll be truly content.

I knew this would happen sooner or later, but I think I might still go to the PS4, plainly because of MLB 13: The Show. But the Xbox One will get alot more sales now, but would Microsoft re-reverse these things? Plus all of the pre-orders made for the PS4 can't be undone likewise for the XB1, so if Microsoft announce that they are re-instating these requirements then there will be an angry mob on their hands.

This isn't a favor microsoft is doing for consumers, they are doing it for the money.

So now everybody is basically saying **** PS4 and getting the Xbox One? Almost all the comments I've seen the last few weeks were about how the Xbox was going to be horrible and that they were all getting PS4's, and now people are saying they are "still" getting the One, even though I'm fairly certain that a lot of them were on Soy's bandwagon not to long ago.

I just realized the business strategy they used, and I predicted it when I heard about DRM.

Make something bad making a lot of people hate it, then remove that bad thing and make everyone love it. Smart

Microsoft done this on purpose. They always had the plan to screw the DRM business and this is how it'll be the best selling console yet. Heck, the DRM thing was probably a **** lie. They done this so that EVERYBODY would be talking about it (negatively) and you know what? It worked. I wouldn't be surprised if everyone in America and England knew about the Xbox right now.

Champz This has basically overturned the two things that have kept me the most skeptical about getting a next-gen console.

I had no plans on switching to PS4 for the sole reason that all of my friends, my account, etc. are all on Xbox. I think Xbox made a really smart move today by listening to its consumers.

Yeah, I didn't want to switch over either I had my account and all my friends. Nice to know they are doing this now.
