Microsoft seeks patent for TV Achievements

4.8
The patent application, which was filed last November and spotted by GamesIndustry International, reads: "Television viewing tends to be a passive experience for a viewer, without many opportunities for the viewer to engage or have interactive experiences with the presented content.
"To increase interactive viewing and encourage a user to watch one or more particular items of video content, awards and achievements may be tied to those items of video content.

"By tying the awards and achievements to particular items of video or advertising content, viewers may be encouraged to increase their viewership of the content, thus increasing advertising opportunities."

Achievements could be dished out for watching a single event such as the Super Bowl or viewing an entire series of a show, it adds.

Potential rewards include new avatar items, virtual money for a game, or even physical prizes.

Achievements could also be tied to viewers performing specific Kinect actions while watching content, Microsoft said.

At Tuesday's Xbox One reveal event, Marc Whitten, Microsoft's corporate vice president of Xbox Live, said that a new version of the online service will be "more powerful, more personal and more intelligent".

The new Xbox Live will offer enhanced cloud functionality, improved matchmaking, new social features, background downloads, skill tracking and an expanded achievements system, Microsoft added.

AustinTheMidget Everybody is blowing this out of proportion... Microsoft is focused on gaming, but they want to bring users the ability to watch tv without having to switch sources.
My whole point is that they want the whole family to enjoy the xbox and not just the gamers. Is it to make money... maybe but i don't think you should complain because they are adding features that you don't have to use but other people can. that is just selfish.

you are correct, i hate all the kids ranting on about how 0MG XBOX 1 CAN ONLY WATCH TV BLABALABLABLABALBALBLALBA.

Skidrow- Micrsoft are stepping away from the gaming part of Xbox and turning it into a new TV subscription which nobody wants !

So when did the new Xbox have nothing to do with gaming. I'm sick and tired of people acting like Xbox One doesn't play games. It does, they're just adding more apps and features to make it more than just a gaming console. It's like having to decide between cake or ice cream, with the Xbox One you get both.
im switching over to sonys ps4 instead of the xbox one because with all the tv apps and bs MS is putting in their console, its taking away from the resources needed on the xbox to play the games at peak settings, while so far sonys ps4 isnt going to be clogged with un-needed apps that run in the background.
Im thinking exactly the same thing when seeing ppl comment things like this. They focus alot on entertainment like tv and apps, but still.. it's mostly focused on gaming, and it will be great for both :)

I feel the same. everyone is acting like it doesn't even play games.

If it is such a great gaming console then why didn't they show ANY gameplay during the reveal, they concentrated on the TV and browser aspects. With an 8-core CPU running at 1.5GHz then it's quite behind with gaming, especially when AMD released an 8-core at 4.2GHz. If you think about it, the Xbox One won't be as better than the 360 than most people think!

Maybe they didn't show any gameplay because E3 is coming up and they decided to show us what else it can do other than play games. -_-
