Wii U Frostbite engine tests yield 'not too promising' results

4.6
EA DICE technical director Johan Andersson revealed that the developer's Frostbite 3 engine, which powers Battlefield 4 and the next entries in the Dragon Age and Mass Effect franchises, does not run on Nintendo's Wii U.

Responding to fan questions on Twitter, Andersson explained that DICE's Wii U experiments with Frostbite 2 had "not too promising" results, leading to the company abandoning efforts to get Frostbite 3 up and running on Nintendo's latest console.

During the Game Developers Conference in March, Epic Games' Mark Rein noted that Unreal Engine 4 does not currently run on the Wii U. Rein later clarified, explaining that licensed developers could potentially port Unreal Engine 4-powered games to the Wii U, at their discretion

-Luna It shouldn't be suprising. I'm suprised Nintendo even exists at this point.

Don't forget the Nintendo is #1 in handheld sales and the Wii still sells pretty well. They dominate the handheld market hands down.

Remakes, Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, you name it those suckers sell like crazy.

Unfortunately what is also hurting the Wii U is that there is NOT a single game that would make me want to play it (yeah I bought one on launch >.> and it has been collecting dust). Give me some Zelda, Smash Bros, something!

They said they would not have this working for the wii

Is the the current gen consoles using frostbite 2 and next gen using frostbite 3... Who would get Battlefield 4 on current gen? I guess if you couldn't get next gen consoles

They could put battlefield 4 on the Wii U but it would be a waste of time and money... If it was on the Wii U it would be a 360 port or ps3 which would be a waste of time cause the sells suck for the Wii U and if the Wii U had its own port it would be a waste of money... The Wii U does not have enough power for next gen but has more power than current gen... game dev don't know what to do with the Wii U and the controller does not help

That sucks for people on the Wii U.

Yes maybe correct. But remember, Wii U came out less than a Year ago. Xbox 360 first debuted I believe in 2005. So if Microsoft came out with a console the same time nintendo did, it would be no contest which is better. I mean a console made 8 YEARS ago should already be not as good as consoles that came out 8 MONTHS ago.

but the wii U was never meant to be a power house. It is a casual gamer console much like the xbox and ps3 but way more casual and really meant for the younger people. But with some mature features.

Activez- Nintendo should just stick to family friendly games.

I agree, that's what they started with and made millions and they are still the leader in family games and the longer they spend wasting their time on projects like this, they could be using their position for profit.

Kind of sad in my opinion. Nintendo could have made a great console if they held the WiiU for another year, yet they released a technologically inferior console that currently has constantly dropping sales ratings despite the PS4 and 720 not even being out yet
