Sony patent to combat piracy by comparing load times.

4.7
A patent describing a "method for validating legitimate media products" attributed to Sony Computer Entertainment surfaced this week. It was originally filed in August 2011, and the patent elaborates on a process by which a piece of media could be detected as legitimate (not pirated) by comparing two load times against a benchmark for the media.

As you can see in the chart above, the patent describes a secondary validation stage to which a serial number and the "user identification information" are checked against "reliable data, such as that sourced from the manufacturer or developer of the media title."
This information could include account names, location, IP addresses, the speed of the user's connection and product license numbers.

The secondary validation would account for load time errors caused by hardware issues, but would also be skipped entirely if the first cycle - the load time benchmark comparisons - checks out.

Krewella That sucks for the people who wanna pirate games. :P

Too bad, they will have to buy it just like everybody else.

Yeah, they shouldn't get free games if nobody else does.

Piracy should be stopped. You guys sitting there enjoying your game it might never come to your mind that a group of alot of hard working people would have spent years making that. Except call of duty of course. Basically my point is, support the developers and their hard work.

AlexThorn I'm all for blocking pirated games, but this method will be a disaster if they try to implement it.

I don't think it would be that bad to implement, but I disagree with your opinion on pirated games.

im my oppionion pirate games are wrong but old games should not be banned and this will be a disastor if the conson/dick tray spins slightly slower due to malfunction

theartftw For those not understanding, it's putting in a timed based check that would be used to see if copies are legitimate store bought/online purchased. If your game loads to fast, the system will mark it as pirated.

I Totally agree with this buddy (:
