Sony has launched a PS5 system software beta program

Sony has opened registrations for a new PlayStation 5 system software beta program.

Starting today, PS5 owners can register for an opportunity to join the first PS5 beta test, which will also add applicants to the potential participant pool for future system software betas automatically.

“By signing up, you could be among the first to put new features to the test and provide essential feedback that will help guide their development,” explained Sony’s platform VP, Hideaki Nishino.

“Our last major PS5 system update in April introduced new features like USB extended storage, cross-generation Share Play, an improved Game Base and other UI enhancements and social features. We’ll share more in the coming weeks about what you can expect in the beta for our next update.”

Registration is open to players over the age of 18 in the US, Canada, Japan, UK, Germany and France. In order to sign up, you’ll need a PS5 console with an internet connection and a PlayStation Network account.

If you’re selected to be part of the program, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to download the beta version of the next system software, Sony said.

And after the beta begins, you can restore your system software to the latest official release version.

Sony released PS5’s first major system software update globally on April 14, adding the ability to store PS5 games on external USB drives (but not play titles from them), and cross-gen Share Play, meaning PS5 users can let friends on PS4 remotely play their games, among other features.

One unannounced feature of the update is an improvement to the disc spinning bug, according to a number of PS5 users.
