Treyarch Dev Talks CoD Gun Balance and Why It’s Broken

4.4
David Vonderhaar, Lead Gameplay Designer at Treyarch, has recently been talking with fans about a rather touchy subject: gun balance. He also had some very bold things to say regarding the direction Call of Duty seems to be going. He recently asked this question on Twitter: “True or False. Perks/ Proficiencies (like Steady Aim/ Quickdraw/ Kick) interfere with gun balance; get in the way of making game competitive.”

Apparently, Vonderhaar “feels like we could see greater gun diversity & less ‘OP’ weapons, if [he] could reserve those ‘properties’ to be part of the base gun.” He believes that “of course you have OP weapons if you can take any of the guns and make them fire faster, reload faster, be more accurate, and have less kick.” We can assume that an example of this could be the case of recoil-less weapons made even sturdier by proficiencies like kick. Instead, he suggests that “if every gun had the 1 or 2 things it did well and the 1 or 2 things it did poorly, you’d have better gun balance.” One fan asked if he considered the fact that perks and proficiencies might bring diversity to the game, which could level the playing field. Vonderhaar responded, “the guns don’t need Perks to be diverse. They can be diverse. Perks ensure they all have to be similar, so that the Perks don’t OP any one of the properties of the gun.”

Now, considering that proficiencies were introduced by Infinity Ward in Modern Warfare 3, could this be a critique of IW’s way of doing things? Or, perhaps even a critique of the direction Call of Duty has been going in general? It seems to be the case as Vonderhaar later boldly stated, “it’s the wrong way to think about it that’s comes from years of us abusing and conditioning you, perhaps, with crap gun tuning.” This also suggests that Treyarch’s next entry could be something a little different than what we’ve come to expect of the Call of Duty franchise.

Vonderhaar’s (much appreciative) transparency with Call of Duty fans is undoubtedly in preparation for Treyarch’s next title, be it “Iron Wolf” or “Black Ops 2.”

Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. Do you feel perks and proficiencies can potentially ruin gun balance?

JimmyBoy1478 this is why i like treyarch over inferior ward they talk with the community

You think infinity ward doesn't read everyone's comments on their game, are you cereal?

I see it as Treyarch is an experiment for IW. They do all the risk taking while IW just takes from them. Tryarch trys to do what the fans want but people always hate it. Treyarch is the better developer, just everyone hates what they wanted.

This is laughable, IW is the one who takes all the risk and treyarch copies them.

IW makes cod 1 and 2 they are good, Treyarch makes cod 3 it sucks and tanks horribly.

IW makes cod 4 (probably the best game in the series), Treyarch makes a carbon copy of cod 4 (only addition being zombies), IW was not happy about having to give them their game engine/code stuff.

IW makes MW2, incorporates many new features, pro perks, longer/bigger/different kill streaks, etc. Treyarch goes and makes a super shitty and easy game that 'fixes' all the problems MW2 had, but its still an inferior game to MW2. Treyarch did add a couple things, but not much, the money system was kind of dumb, wager matches were cool. Zombies were alright (not a new addition), till you realize after you play a level a few times its just the biggest waste of time ever. There was still bad hit registry. I think the biggest and (only) contribution Treyarch made to 'IW' was the hotfix technology/idea.

Anyways MW3 is pretty good, again Infinity ward added some new things, multiple point streak classes, assault/support/specialist class, weapon proficiencies etc. The only thing I didn't like which was addressed like 12 hours ago is the 'payback' system of someone spawning like 20 feet away from where you killed them so they can come for you immediately after they die.

Only reason people hate IW is because Treyarch doesn't dumb it down for the general COD fan (take out quick scoping, kill streaks stacking with kills from kill streaks, nuke, etc)

I meant other than a sniper ^^

Everyone likes the teacher that lets them slide by and get an A without doing work.

No one likes the teacher that actually makes you work hard for the A.

Are you kidding me bro?
Taking out quickscoping doesnt have anything to do with making things hard.

In MW2 and MW3 if you get raped by a quick scoper when you have any type of gun other than assault rifle, you should feel bad for yourself.

And killstreaks stacking with killstreaks, I kinda agree with taking it out but I don't at the same time. It still KILLS that you're getting, you earned that streak so you should be able to receive the benefits from it.

And nuke? Really? If someone gets a 25 killstreak, I would rather them get a nuke. They earned it. Whether it was with gun kills or killstreak kills. They deserve it.

Well to me

IW games (besides Cod 4): People who like easy and frustrating games ( frustrating because it's so easy anyone with two hands can do good) that aren't skilled.

Treyarch Games: Actually a challenge and don't spoon feed players as much as IW (death streaks in MW3 are the most annoying **** ever)

IW>tregay

End of story.

I'm assuming you mean every other game developer> IW and Treygay = some name some immature ass kid who doesn't like their games would use?

If so I would have to disagree, COD is the best saling game franchise in history (I think) if they were bad developers they would make bad games and people wouldn't buy the games because they are bad. (Frontline: Fuels of War for an example)

TTG_Lame Modern Warfare 3, is fine the way it is. Not boring, because of overpowered guns and perks. Black Ops was too balanced so everyone hated it. MW3 took everything that everyone wanted out of MW2. Thats what everyone wanted but people are still not happy.

Pretty sure "everyone" is a very steep statement to be made. Most people dislike a game because they aren't very good at it. I actually do better on mw3 but it frustrates me more than blackops did. Opinions, eyone has one

I love how Infinity ward has a much more balanced gun battles. I love having perks for my gun, treyarch cant talk with the black ops FAMAS. People like the modern warfare games more then any COD.
it could be cool if treyarch makes a fast paced game based on the Gulf War, slow gameplay (black ops) isnt nearly as fun

I really like the sound of Iron Wolf, you know as a change from the tradition. Problem being that they are picking up from Black Ops :(. To me the game ended and they need a new story to it. Perhaps full zombies game?

If you truly think about it no Call of Duty has a well balanced Gun System.
