Microsoft: 360 'only console to show growth this year'

4.8

Despite the fact that every console saw month-to-month losses in July, Microsoft has issued its own take on the somewhat depressing NPD numbers, claiming that the Xbox 360 is "the only console to show growth this year" and "the industry's sole bright spot in 2009". Readers will recall that Aaron Greeberg made similar statements last month, after which it was revealed that the Xbox 360 sales had grown by 21 percent since last June.
Microsoft now reports that number is down to 17 percent growth over the first seven months in 2009, as compared to the same period last year. Granted, the number isn't quite as remarkable, but given that the Xbox 360 is the only console to achieve any growth at all -- as long as you don't count those pesky handhelds -- it's impressive nonetheless.
Microsoft also touts that the Xbox 360 is the number one platform for third-party titles. The company claims that third-party game sales totaled $101 million in July, which "maintains the streak of leading third-party games sales for every month of 2009." See, little red arrows aren't all bad.

@sean actually the dream cast had the first console based MMORPG Phantasy star online and it had over 30 people in a server instance at once with up to 4 people in a party. And in the first expansion for the game sega introduced voice chat (although their was a latency delay) it was the base that sony would improve on for games on the ps2 such as socom.

As for the price and stock well sony did the same with the ps3 it took a long time for the ps3 to gain ground on the xbox 360 if SEGA had the funding to take a loss with the dreamcast for as long as sony did with the ps3 then things might have been a lot different.

Of course this would never have happened since sega only had games and the sega dream cast sells as an income while sony was selling televisions and other household appliances.

@lordbulldog yeah i understand that but the price had so much to do with it i think it was something like $299 when it 1st came out and people were freaking out the fact sega over stocked themselfs and then it got out they were stopping making them because demard did not match how many they have i think that killed off would be buyers also the online was pritty lame i know it was one of the 1st to do online gaming but at the time it was just leaderboards and email and it was rare to have a 1v1 online game due to the current internet speeds so i think the need and the internet speeds mixed with the fact the DVD came out is what killed it in the end internet speeds, sony, DVD,

@sean i couldint agree more mate though it would have been uneconimcally viable to include a drive since the dreamcast allready had a lot of expensive hardware such as the built in dial up modem and the fastest graphic card avalible at the time.

Its a pity though as during the dream casts last months modders introduced a way to play video cds on the dreamcast using a cheat cartridge similar to actionreplay for the playstation 1.

@lordbulldog the dreamcast was unlucky to much to fast i had one it was very underated and i think it was just unlucky to be in the show of sony if the dreamcast had a DVD drive i think it would still be around today because i think that is what killed it

i wish sega would bring a new console out the dreamcast was the most under rated gaming console of all time not only did it have internet access years before the ps2 but it had some of the most inovative games of all time such as skies of arcadia power stone and phantasy star online.

Microsoft is really stepping up there game. The Xbox 360 is the best gaming console out there it seems. It has featured titles that Nintendo or Sony can't even contend with.

I have a feeling that Bill Gates will relize how much money and power he has. Because he is dumb. He has all the money. He needs to lose weight and buy a dirt bike. Lucky bastard.
