FF7 Remake’s director says he’s ‘prioritising Part 2’s development’

Final Fantasy 7 Remake director Tetsuya Nomura has said Square Enix is currently prioritising Part 2’s development over any potential further DLC for the original game.

Last month Square Enix announced Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, a PlayStation 5 update of last year’s RPG, featuring updated visuals, a Photo Mode and a new story episode featuring the character Yuffie.

Speaking to Famitsu (via an official translation provided to VGC), Nomura confirmed that the development team currently has no plans to create further story content, as it focuses on Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 development.

“Due to the nature of the upgrade system, it resulted in us having to label the new Yuffie sections as ‘DLC’. However, the original intent was to create a PS5 version of FF7 Remake and not to produce DLC. Accordingly, we do not have any plans for DLC at this time,” he said.

The veteran artist and designer indicated that the knowledge gained from porting FF7 Remake to PS5 had helped make the full sequel’s development progress more easily.

“Sorting out the development environment on PS5 for FF7 Remake Intergrade, meant that moving on to developing the sequel was much smoother,” Nomura said. “We are now prioritizing the roadmap for completing the next game, so if we do need to think about more DLC then it will probably come after that is finished.”

Nomura has confirmed he will be stepping away from his role for the next FF7 Remake instalment. The developer will instead take on a broader creative director position, overlooking all future Final Fantasy 7 projects including the recently announced mobile games.

He told Famitsu of his schedule working on multiple FF7 games: “It seems like I will be having a busy time for the foreseeable future, not just this year but next year and the year after that.

“This is only just the first announcement relating to FF7 and you can look forward to more information coming in the future. But first of all, look out for that release of FF7 Remake Intergrade on June 10.”

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 has entered full production and Nomura has said he wants to deliver it “as soon as possible.”

In a previous interview, Nomura said that players would have to wait for Part 2 before the series makes full use of the PlayStation 5‘s hardware features.

Asked if the game would support DualSense haptics and 3D audio, he replied: “As for adaptive triggers, they are partially supported. However, in terms of using all of the features of PlayStation 5, please wait for the next game where we can start from scratch.”
