Cyberpunk 2077 will have both large and small side quests

4.2
There will be plenty of things to do in Cyberpunk 2077 outside of the main storyline.

Cyberpunk 2077 will have main quests, side quests and street stories, and each one is a bit different.

Obviously, main quests are different – always – in a game, but Cyberpunk 2077 adds to the mix with street stories and side quests.

As with most games, main quests are the largest. While you will have to complete the main quests in order to finish the game, secondaries are purely optional.

Side quests can be large, or even bigger than some of the main quests. They can also be rather short. Players will find these will fill in parts of the story which weren’t implemented into the main questline.

During these quests it’s possible to impact the main story of the game. Characters only met during a side quest could suddenly show up in the main story. It’s also possible for a small quest to turn into “something much bigger and then change the whole main story of the game.”

“Sometimes they also have a specific purpose, like introducing a new theme to the game, or telling the story of a specific community or location,” said CDPR quest design coordinator Philipp Weber in a development post. “So it’s absolutely worth playing every quest in the game and to see how they interact with each other.”

Of course, there will also be minor quests which are short, but tell an interesting story.

Street Stories are different. Those who played The Witcher 3 will find these are similar in scope to monster hunting. These are the jobs a mercenary in the game, such as V, will acquire from fixers. Doing the jobs will give the character more street cred. Each job is varied, provides ample room for various playstyles, and “many creative ways” to solve.

While there is no true ‘fail’ in the main questline, the player can fail a job quest. For instance: should the player go on a killing spree during the job, and it was specified they shouldn’t, they won’t get paid.

Cyberpunk 2077 also features optional companions. These characters can tag along during certain quests and possibly change the outcome. There will also be times when a character will not join the player depending upon the choices they have made.

In short, there are different possibilities and consequences to some of the quests in Cyberpunk 2077, but these situations will be balanced.

The entire development post is a really good read, so you should take some time out of your day and have a look at it. Especially if you are looking forward to playing the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 releases April 16 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Side quests are fun to play in between the game.
