Video game sales topped $1 billion in January, the best in seven years

Video game sales topped slighly over $1 billion in January 2018, a 59% jump not seen since the same time 7 years ago. As noted in a report by Seeking Alpha, video game hardware and software saw a general increase across all game categories.

The total amount of sales for video games and hardware topped out at $1.096 billion. By comparison, in January 2017 video game hardware and software sales was only $690 million per the NPD Group, a market research firm.

Here’s a breakdown the numbers for the $1.096 billion number for January 2018:

Hardware sales increased 119% to $278 million, video games rose 51% to $517 million, and video game accessories were up 37% to $301 million. Hardware saw the biggest increase and had not reached a comparable level since January 2011. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo collectively moved over 1 million consoles.

The Nintendo Switch sold the largest amount of consoles and had a large number of top-selling game titles, including Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Mario Kart 8. Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) was the biggest seller for Microsoft.
