Video game sales topped slighly over $1 billion in January 2018, a 59% jump not seen since the same time 7 years ago. As noted in a report by Seeking Alpha, video game hardware and software saw a general increase across all game categories.

The total amount of sales for video games and hardware topped out at $1.096 billion. By comparison, in January 2017 video game hardware and software sales was only $690 million per the NPD Group, a market research firm.

Here’s a breakdown the numbers for the $1.096 billion number for January 2018:

Hardware sales increased 119% to $278 million, video games rose 51% to $517 million, and video game accessories were up 37% to $301 million. Hardware saw the biggest increase and had not reached a comparable level since January 2011. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo collectively moved over 1 million consoles.

The Nintendo Switch sold the largest amount of consoles and had a large number of top-selling game titles, including Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Mario Kart 8. Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) was the biggest seller for Microsoft.

The numbers are getting madder and madder each year with how much devs are earning from things now. BUt $1 billion in a month, christ.

For sure dude, usually its just microtransactions that are giving the developers the money but some have great ideas to get paid items in.

You have to try games for them to be entertaining to you. Just because most games get pop doesn't mean there are others out there that aren't good.

Silky Big numbers and it's good to see the figures can be similar to what they used to be back in my 'golden age' of gaming.
