Xbox hardware revenue up 14% due to Xbox One X launch

Microsoft hasn’t provided sales figured for Xbox consoles for a very long time, but at least we know how its gaming business is faring.

Microsoft has reported second quarter earnings for the period ending January 31, 2018 noting a 8% increase in revenue for its gaming business compared to the same quarter in 2017.

Revenue in More Personal Computing sector, which houses the company’s Xbox business, reported $12.2 billion in earnings, up 2% year-over-year (yoy0.

Gaming revenue increased $303 million or 8%, driven by higher revenue from Xbox hardware and Xbox software and services.

Xbox hardware revenue increased 14%, primarily due to the launch of Xbox One X. Xbox software and services revenue increased 4%, primarily due to Xbox Live revenue growth, offset in part by a decrease in revenue from the prior year launch of video games.

It was also reported Xbox Live now has 59 million active users, which is up 7% yoy compared to 55 million in Q2 2017 which blasted the prior year’s record of 49 million.

For the trailing six months, gaming revenue increased $313 million or 6%, driven by higher revenue from Xbox software and services, offset in part by lower Xbox hardware revenue. Xbox software and services revenue increased 11%, due to a higher volume of Xbox Live transactions, offset by decline in revenue per transaction. Xbox hardware revenue decreased 2%.

As a whole, the company reported a 12% increase in revenue of $28.9 billion with an operating of $8.7 billion , up 10% yoy.

Only 14%? You would think the launch of the X would've vaulted Microsoft a lot further ahead in sales all around. Guess not.
