Destiny 2 reveals some bad news for PS4 Pro owners

4.3
There’s some bad news for Destiny fans: Destiny 2 won’t be able to run 60 frames per second on the PS4 or PS4 Pro.

Game director Luke Smith confirmed information on game’s frame rate to IGN. “It will not run at 60 [FPS] on the Pro,” Smith said. “I don’t want people to continue to hope, we’re going to be matter-of-fact about that stuff.”

Smith went on to explain that even the powerful PS4 Pro is lacking the “horsepower” to run Destiny 2‘s “rich physics simulation, with collision and players, networking, etc.” While the GPU is powerful enough to play the game in 4K, its CPU isn’t strong enough to consistently support the higher frame rate.

As a result, Destiny 2 will be locked to 30 FPS for PS4 and PS4 Pro players.

Over on the PC, the game will feature an uncapped frame rate, meaning that the game’s performance will be determined by each individual’s computer. As for the Xbox version of the game, Smith declined to comment—so we’ll have to wait and see whether Microsoft’s own beefed-up hardware revision, currently codenamed Project Scorpio, will be capable of running the game at a higher frame rate.

Destiny 2 releases on September 8th on consoles. The PC version does not yet have a release date.

Swift This is honestly hilarious to think of a AAA game being 30fps anymore. Apparently there are currently only 2 fps's that are 30fps on the ps4/xbox one and they are planetside 2 and Destiny. What the shit is Bungie thinking? Between this and no dedicated servers, are they trying to kill the game before it launches?

It's consoles. If you were expecting 60 you must really have high hopes in very outdated hardware.

Every other First Person Shooter on xbox one and PS4 are now running at almost a stable 60 fps. halo 5, call of duty (Ghosts, AW, BO3, and IW), battlefield (4, hardline, and 1), titanfall (and 2), overwatch, and Star Wars Battlefront.

Bungie is just trying to save money and please stockholders.

Halo 5 - True.

CoD Games - Well some suffer frame drop issues but mostly a stable 60. I think mostly due to poor optimization and the outdated engine but saying these games never drop frames is a bit of a stretch. Not to mention lots of model and texture pop in on consoles. Maybe they work better on PS4 but Bo3 will still suffer from texture pop in.

Battlefield Games - These do not run at a constant 60. While the pro may maintain 60 more often, it still can't do it entirely at least in the case of BF1. On the base consoles the only time you hit 60 is looking up at the sky every other moment it is 30-50 fps.

Titanfall - Not at a constant 60 as it will dip when actual action begins.

Titanfall 2 - As far as I can tell it is a constant 60 for the most part.

Overwatch - Intel HD Graphics can handle this game. It's nothing impressive to hit 60.

Star Wars Battlefront - Mostly at a 60

Most of the games listed do not run at a stable 60, although they do cap theirs at 60. I'm surprised you'd use CoD Ghosts as an example as even though that game looks very meh there are large frame drops in some maps that can really throw you off while playing although this is more than likely a result of developer laziness. Destiny ran at a locked 30 and dipped down in raids such as Wraith of the Machines, do you really think the sequel would run much better?

If you care about 60 so much, buy a PC. 30 in the first Destiny was fairly playable either way.

I still think the reason consoles are locked to 30fps is because of the original current-gens (Original Xbox One, Original PS4). Microsoft and Sony have been ok with making these higher tiered consoles, but only as long as games still played on the originals. The only difference allowed was resolution/graphics detail as far as I know.

Think about it. You're gonna tell me that as a 30fps PS4 player you'd be ok with a 60fps PS4 Pro owner beating you more often because they have more time to react/have a more expensive console? That's like pay to win, and nobody wants that.

I think they have it locked at 30fps on consoles because the manufacturers (Microsoft, Sony) have required that the only advantage between the original and updated systems is resolution and detail, which gives negligible amounts of, or if any, advantage. The FPS advantage here is controlled by the manufacturers.

Wasn't this already covered on an earlier news article?

Mikey So the Scorpio will be able to handle 60FPS?

It better be able to, especially if I'm going to fork out a lot of money or more money than usual for a console.

Yeah I dont wanna be spending $700 or however much its gonna be if it's just gonna be the same specs lol

To me this really isn't that big of a deal. If you're so bothered about Frame rate then switch to PC
