If you're really that concerned then call 101 and let the police know that he could be a problem. Other than that there is nothing you can do, legally speaking.

There is no law against it, if there was than our parents couldn't talk to us lol. That does change however if she tells him do not talk to her. If he continues to talk with her when she doesn't want to it's harassment. Though he will not be thrown in jail if cops are called, it'll look bad on him and it'll scare him away.

I'm from england and couldn't find anything

In that case... it's waaayyyy more lenient...

gotta love the crappy law in england ey

What do you expect? "You spoke to this girl younger than you and asked her if she would like to engage in non-sexual activities. You are a disgusting and dirty paedophile who must spend time in prison. Shame on you and your family."

Come on. He's 17 and is likely an idiot. Block him and move on with your lives. Just because he likes or finds it fun to talk to girls younger than him does not make him a violent paedophile.

Innocent until proven guilty is the phrase, but it's much simpler in this case, 'Innocent until a crime has been committed.'

Its moraly wrong ! you must be just as bad as him, your comment is irrelevant

No, it's socially wrong. Get off your high horse. He's 17, teenagers generally do stupid things. That's why there aren't any laws against it.

okay question for you .... if you found out a 17 year old was messaging a 12 year old family member wouldn't you want something done about it ?

I would talk to the person. Explain why we want them to stop and keep an eye on them afterwards. If it turned out that they were doing it again with another girl then I would let the police, school, parents, etc. know to keep an eye on him. I wouldn't go straight to legal action. That type of thing can ruin a person's life over one dumb decision.

Why is 5 years such a big issue? My mom was 15 and my dad was 23 when they met, and they have been married over 25 years.

I know right? It's just because the numbers are so small... When you're older, no one even asks your age. You just meet up and get together.

Cavalry is right, there's no illegal act being committed.

For all you know he has a disability or he has social problems. A normal seventeen year old boy wouldn't lie to a twelve year old girl.

If you want to do something about it, message the boy and ask him what's going on. Your family member is twelve, most twelve year old children forget something or lie. You don't know both sides of the story.

Don't call the police, they can't do anything.

Even if he said he was 15 that's still creepy talking to a 12 year old lol. Consent in NY is 17 I believe and it changes depending on state. She must've looked older that a typical 12 yr old
