Like others have said I guess it depends on what you would like to do in the future with your career. You do not have to have a college education to be successful. For example, if you are an entrepreneur and starting your own business college isn't a necessity. If you plan on being anything in the medical field, computer related IT, or big box store management, then plan on going through college.

I am a good example for this because I have a bachelors degree in computer science. My major was computer networking and administration with a sub major of cyber security. I have my ccna, a+, c+, voip, and lan certifications. With all that said I sit here as a quality manager of a large international plastics company making more than I ever would with what I have now, in terms of degree and certification. I can always get certified in more but I am comfortable where I am at. So yes, I wasted thousands of dollars and time of my life, but it was an awesome experience.

Core classes are designed to be reviews of high school. People always say they will never use algebra or never use history or science but you are wrong. It may not be as obvious as 2x-1=3 solve for x, but if you look at all the word problems you learned in high school, you use math all the time and just do not realize it. For example, the cop who "doesn't need algebra". If there is a bank robbery and the suspect is traveling at high speeds, lets say 70, and he is going west on 1st street. If 1st street dead ends in 3 miles, how long does the officer have to beat the suspect to the dead end and apprehend him? Of course the officer may say, oh I have less than 5 minutes, but if he never would have learned algebra he wouldn't be able to make that quick estimate.

Even though I do not use my degree I highly recommend going to school. If you can pursue something you love doing, why not? If you want to be an engineer because you love designing things, buckle down, knock the classes out, and become successful at what you love doing. Do I think it is a necessity? No. Do I think that everyone should at least attempt it and see if it is right for them? Yes.

I would say that some of the stupid classes in it are pointless, but college itself is important.

_Sync wrote I'm currently a freshmen in college and I have come to the conclusion college is a joke. Here I am paying for an algebra class that I'm never going to use. The kid sitting next to me wants to become a cop yet he has to take to an algebra class. I can not wrap my head around that at all. It's all one big money making scheme. Why can't it be geared directly for your career path?

If you want a specific degree, you are in the wrong path perhaps. A technical school doesn't have any of the stupid remedial courses or stupid shit you won't ever need. You only take classes that are actually going to help you in your career choice. It usually has a shorter graduation period.

But you only get a technical degree, and a renowned college gives you a degree that businesses like more. It is up to you though.

Also, if it took you this long to figure out school is a money scheme, maybe that is the issue. Paying ass loads of money for a piece of paper and the knowledge learned from 2-4 years of college is dumb, but if you want a good job it is part of the process.
